Wow, thanks.

When we conducted our Content Survey a few months ago, we asked for your feedback about TheSabre.com - and you sure gave it to us. We're flattered that so many of you enjoy the site and think we're doing a good job. But we know it can get even better, and your comments in the survey will ensure that that happens.

Please click here to check out the survey results. Also keep in mind that some of the most important feedback we received were responses to the four essay questions that dealt with board monitoring, message board functions, recruiting coverage and overall content. We didn't include those in the article because there were so many of them, but all of us here read your answers carefully. We found out what you like, what you don't like and what you'd like to see more of.

What's clear is that many of you especially like stuff that makes you a more informed fan - in-depth analysis, practice reports, "Ask the Experts" - so we'll make sure to provide more of that. But many of you also offered great ideas for new content - features like profiles of fans and behind-the-scenes figures in UVa sports. We're going to add more content like that to fully capture the whole spectrum of Cavalier athletics. Keep an eye out for those stories in the coming weeks and months.

Critical comments are valuable in helping us figure out ways to improve the site, but we were overwhelmed by all the flattery. Such as this:

John Galinsky was a great addition--his articles are top notch. Bringing him onboard as content manager/editor was a great move!

Aw, thanks, Mom. That was sweet.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Virginia added two more commitments this week, giving the 'Hoos 11 total.

Image: Sean GottschalkDeep Run (Glen Allen, VA) star Sean Gottschalk was the first player to commit this week. The 6-5, 250-pound defensive end chose Virginia over Boston College, Georgia, Miami and Ohio State - all had offered. Gottschalk had received close to 20 Division 1A offers up to this point.

As a junior last season, Gottschalk, a good athlete who also plays basketball, finished with 56 tackles and six sacks. A tight end and defensive end for former UVa player and current Deep Run head coach Lenny Pritchard, he projects as a defensive end in Al Groh's scheme.

An excellent student, he carries a 3.7 grade point average and earned all-academic honors.

Virginia's second verbal of the week came from a player very new to the targets list. On Thursday, the Cavaliers extended an offer to 6-3, 195-pound Monsignor Bonner (Lansdowne, PA) quarterback Marc Verica. UVa quarterbacks coach Mike Groh asked for a quick decision and got one, as Verica committed shortly thereafter. He chose Virginia over an official offer from Wisconsin and a verbal offer from Michigan State.

As a junior last season, Verica threw for 1,700 yards and 10 touchdowns in a run-oriented version of the west coast offense. He turned in impressive performances at the Nike camp at State College and at UVa's summer camp. Verica says a strong arm (can throw the ball 70 yards in the air), quick feet (ran a 4.25 in the shuttle at Nike) and poise in the pocket make him stand out over other quarterbacks. He is looking forward to the 2005 season and a more passer-friendly offense.

Earlier this week, we posted Q&A sessions with verbal commitments OL B.J. Cabbell and DE/LB Nate Collins. Here is an excerpt from Nate Collins' article.

TheSabre.com: Was Virginia a school you were always interested in?

Nate Collins: In school last year, college was creeping up on everyone, but I was the kind of kid who wanted to take my time and when I find the school that's right for me, then I'll pursue it. Once I realized I was going to get a lot of looks for football, I would let letters come and see what schools were showing interest in me. I would handpick out what would be my top schools to start pursuing. At first, BC was pursuing me a lot. I went to their prospect day and the coaches talked to me. The coaches were going to keep in touch and stuff like that. And UConn as well. Then, one day, my coach pulled me out of class and told me there was a coach there to see me. It was coach D'Onofrio. We gave him a tape that day and he said 'I'll be keeping in touch with you guys'. He made his one call to me in May and was like, 'we're really interested and you should come down to camp'. I went to the camp and, down at the camp, I got a tour of the campus and loved the campus. I loved Virginia and loved the atmosphere of the school and everything. At the camp, I just performed well. When I came home from camp two days later, my coach told me I had to call coach Al Groh because he had to ask me a question. That's when they offered me a full scholarship.

   News, Notes and Fan Discussion

Post of the Week

This time of year, any post that starts a feisty discussion is good stuff. At least it gives us something to debate until football practice starts...

Subject: With FSU personnel losses, expectations rise even higher. With the past 3
Posted by: superstring on Thu Jul 14 2005 2:08:09 PM
Message: recruiting years, 2 out of 3 big games at home, all other games very winnable, a senior QB, pre-season AAs on O and D (our 'trophied' LB), good enough lines and DBs, and a highly rated backfield, along with attendant hooplah, I'm edging closer to calling for results or accountability. No team is without problem sectors of their squad -- no excuse. Maybe it'll be postponed until after 2006, if both 2005 and 2006 are disappointments, but we're getting closer to having to prove up on the field. To me, that starts with a major bowl in the upcoming season, and 3 or 4 losses will be underachieving.

For me, it's in 2005. If we don't break out next fall -- or certainly no later than 2006 -- then I'll just tone down the rhetoric (and hope others will), settle back and enjoy 7 or 8 wins a year, just like we did in the 'bad old days' under old George. That was before we started getting greedy (and sounding like it). Well, we've made a lot of recruiting noise annually, and we fall all over ourselves praising Al and The Staff. Time to put up.

    Around the Wahoo sports world...

  • One of UVa's longest-serving head coaches called it quits last week. Phil Rogers, the women's tennis coach for 23 years, announced his retirement. He compiled a 260-233 record and led the Cavs to seven NCAA tournaments, most recently in 2003. The team struggled last season, going 6-15, and the program has fallen while the men's tennis program has soared in recent years.

  • One of Virginia's volleyball recruits was named MVP of the USA Junior Olympic Volleyball Championships. Shannon Davis, a middle hitter from Austin, Texas, led the Austin Juniors 18 Mizuno team to the gold medal at the event in Salt Lake City.

  • In football, no official dates have been set for the start of practice and Meet the Team Day. We'll let you know as soon as those are scheduled.

  • Where Are They Now?: Aaron Brooks and James Farrior, John Galinsky

Image: Aaron BrooksIt seems like just yesterday that Aaron Brooks and James Farrior were playing for the Cavaliers. But no. Now they're wily NFL veterans. Brooks is getting ready for his seventh professional season, Farrior his ninth. We caught up with them Thursday afternoon at the UVa Bookstore, where they were signing autographs and plugging their own books. They talked about their careers and their fond memories of UVa.

  • A Staff Built for Success, Greg Waters

Image: Coach Dave LeitaoWith the hiring of former Drexel head coach Steve Seymour, Dave Leitao completed his collection of coaching talent to begin the John Paul Jones era of Virginia basketball. Who are these guys - Seymour, Gene Cross and Rob Lanier? Where did they come from and what experience do they bring to Charlottesville? Their most important quality, Leitao says, is that they are all winners.
