Hard to believe, but running TheSabre.com can seem like a job sometimes. For over a year, I prepared the content, combed the message boards and maintained the site nearly every day. I was fully immersed in the Wahoo sports world and in our little online operation here. So leaving the country (and the Sabre community) for two full weeks was an interesting experience, to say the least.

Preparing for football season, Galinsky and his dad show no mercy at the Roman Coliseum.

I admit that I checked out the Sabre a few times from Internet cafes while travelling through Europe with a friend and visiting my father in Rome. But I wasn't perusing every post or keeping up with all the news. Football commitments? The ACC crime report? All of that could wait. I had too much wine to drink, pasta to eat and sun to soak. And to be honest, I didn't miss it one bit. There are far more important things than UVa sports, and it's easy to realize that when you're visiting ancient ruins in Rome and Athens, or meeting people from all over the world on ferries in the Greek islands. (It's also easy to gain perspective when three bombs detonate in the same London Underground that you were riding four days before.)

But I'm still glad to be back. Back in a land of good cheeseburgers, intelligent shower design and central air conditioning. And, yes, glad to be back at work. After a little time off, it all seems fresh, and fun, and sort of new again. The Cavs got some more commitments? Cool. Ernie Sims, etc., were arrested? Geez. This time of year, it doesn't take long to get caught up. And re-energized. And excited about UVa sports again.

After all, it shouldn't take a vacation to bring home this point: discussing and covering the Wahoos may not be the most important work in the world, but it sure isn't a job. It's a joy.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Cedric Jeffries, a 6-2, 185-pound wide receiver/defensive back out of Egg Harbor (N.J.) Township High School, plans to take an unofficial visit to the University of Virginia today and will return home tomorrow. Virginia has offered and is seriously in the running along with Maryland and Wisconsin, among others.

Jeffries, who plays safety and receiver, has been timed at 4.5 in the 40-yard dash. Mike Groh is the main recruiter.

UVa lost out on two of its top quarterback targets this week when Bishop McDevitt (Harrisburg, PA) star Jeremy Ricker committed to Maryland and Downingtown East (Exton, PA) signal caller Pat Devlin verballed to the Miami Hurricanes. Ricker chose the Terps over Oregon while the Cavs were in the final two for Devlin.

Mount Tabor (Winston-Salem, NC) dual-threat quarterback O.C. Wardlow and Springdale (AR) star Mitch Mustain are the only other quarterbacks with offers from the Cavs.

Bishop McDevitt (Harrisburg, PA) star running back LaSean McCoy could narrow his list very soon per head coach Jeff Weachter. McCoy, who has been timed at 4.25 in the 40, is one of the nation's top rushers and is no doubt one of UVa's top targets.

   News, Notes and Fan Discussion

Post of the Week

We're cracking down on opposing fans who clutter the boards with threads about rival teams, but this Hokie fan seems to have the right idea.

Subject: After reading up on yesterdays messages, I can't wait for the season
Posted by: VaTechie on Fri Jul 8 2005 11:16:01 AM
Message: to start. As a rivalry, I am going to try very hard to refrain from being sucked into some of the message threads that trash this board. After years of posting, I should know that some of my responses whether right or wrong, only add fuel to the fire.

I ask everyone to start some real Hoo content threads when the first page gets full of non hoo related information. Therefore, here is my first effort.

Some Hoo questions:

1) After a good night of partying, you wake up next to a Jeanie, and she tells you that you were so good, that you get 3 wishes that allow you to bring back 3 players from past teams to play next year. Who would you pick and why?

2) Hoo are your favorite walk ons?

3) Hoo are your favorite team leaders from past teams and why?

4) If you had to pick the all time "exceeded" expectations team, Hoo would be on it?

    Around the Wahoo sports world...

  • Melvin Massey, a backup nose tackle for three years at UVa, has decided to spend his final season of eligibility at another school and another position. Massey transferred to Division I-AA Hampton University, where he will be eligible immediately, and says he plans to move to defensive end. An undersized nose tackle, the 6-1, 267-pound Massey graduated from UVa in May with a bachelor's in sociology. He made just 19 tackles in three seasons but his departure reduces Virginia's depth. Keenan Carter is expected to start at nose tackle with Kwakou Robinson the likely backup.

  • Several Cavalier programs added assistant coaches this week. Jeff House, the top assistant for the WNBA's Washington Mystics, will join Debbie Ryan's women's basketball staff. Steve Pritzker, a former coxswain at Yale, was named a full-time assistant for the women's rowing team after serving on a part-time basis for two years. Pat McGain, an All-American wrestler at Indiana last season, was hired as an assistant wrestling coach.

  • Wyatt Allen, a 2001 UVa graduate, won the Diamond Sculls title at the Henley Royal Regatta in Henley-on-Thames, England, one of the most prestigious events in rowing. Allen, who rowed for Virginia's club team in college, won a gold medal in the 2004 Olympics as a member of the United States men's eight crew.

  • Senior midfielder Sarah Huffman was named to the United States Under-21 women's soccer national team that will compete in the Nordic Cup later this month in Sweden. Huffman led the Cavaliers with 14 assists last season and was selected the ACC's defensive player of the year.

  • Jess Wilk may be Virginia's field hockey coach, but she's still a heck of a lacrosse player. Wilk was named to the All-World team after leading the United States to a second-place finish in the IFWLA World Cup. Former UVa star Lauren Aumiller also played for the Americans, who lost 14-7 to Australia in the championship game.

  • ACC's Impact Players: Top 5 Freshmen, Greg Waters

Image: Ahmad BrooksEvery team in the ACC has talented players, valuable players, important players. But which players will make the biggest impact in the conference in 2005? We've already discussed the top five "impact" players in the senior, junior, and sophomore classes. Today we look at the incoming freshmen who will be making waves for years to come. Our list includes Virginia's Eugene Monroe, the talented offensive lineman from New Jersey.

  • Ask the Experts #9: Matt Blundin, TheSabre.com

Image: Matt Blundin As UVa's starting quarterback in 1991, Matt Blundin led the ACC in passing efficiency and threw 224 passes without an interception. He was picked in the second round by the Kansas City Chiefs and played for the Chiefs, Bears and Lions. He currently teaches and coaches at Monticello High School in Charlottesville. In this installment of "Ask the Experts," Matt answers five of your questions about QB play, including how to read defenses, the different challenges at each level of football, the significance of height and the difficulty of teaching high school players.

  • AP Report #1: Alvin Pearman's Rookie Diary, TheSabre.com

Image: NAME The Jaguars keep all of the rookies in a hotel until the summer workouts are done and we break from our OTAs (organized team activities). I'm renting an apartment for the season and we'll see how things go. Once I get a better feel for things I'll look for something more permanent. I was really surprised about how similar the [Jaguars] operation was run to what coach Groh had in place the last four years. There are a lot of similarities. When coach Groh said he was running an NFL operation at Virginia, he wasn't lying.
