Wahoo friends, I'd like to start this week's SabreMail off with some good news. Don't worry, this isn't a car insurance promotion. The University of Virginia kicked off July in style, landing a verbal commitment from 6-5, 310-pound offensive tackle B.J. Cabell. Cabell becomes the 8th player to commit to UVa in the 2006 football recruiting class. A starter since his freshman year at Nelson County High School (Lovingston, VA), Cabell has earned first-team all-district honors each of the past two seasons. He picked up an offer from the 'Hoos only days after an impressive performance at UVa's summer camp. Now, wasn't that refreshing? Well folks, this should be my last SabreMail before John Galinsky returns from his European vacation. He emailed me from Athens, Greece the other day telling me he's having a blast - with the exception of wiping out on a moped. Never fear, injuries were minor. Let's just pray he gets back in one piece ;)

This Week In Recruiting By Chris Horne Chris Dalton also committed to UVa's 2006 football recruiting class this week. A 6-1 ½, 165-pound prospect out of West Iredell HS in Statesville, North Carolina, Dalton plays wide receiver and cornerback in high school but is being recruited as a receiver for UVa. As a junior last season, Dalton caught 37 passes for 525 yards and five touchdowns. He returned 14 kickoffs for 336 yards and two scores and intercepted four passes on defense. Very athletic, Dalton excels in track and field in addition to football. "He's tremendously quick and fast," West Iredell head coach Mark Weycker said of Dalton in the Sabre EDGE article. "He's a young man right now. He hasn't even turned 17 years old, so physically he's the type of kid I envision in three years carrying about 195 pounds and be as quick or quicker and as athletic as he is right now. He's just real explosive and real athletic." In track, Dalton finished second in this year's 300-meter hurdles event and finished fifth in last year's 110-meter hurdles event. He posted a 4.33 time in the 40-yard dash as well as a 35.6-inch vertical leap at the Shrine Bowl combine earlier this year. Dalton chose the 'Hoos over an offer from Clemson and heavy interest from ECU and UNC.
UVa has received excellent news from the 2005 class over the past few weeks. As reported by the Richmond Times-Dispatch, OL Branden Albert, LB Olu Hall and DL Kevin Crawford gained admission to UVa and will enroll in summer school. Hall, who was rated as the #1 prospect in the state in the 2004 class, spent the past year at Hargrave Military Academy. Though he didn't see a lot of playing time at outside linebacker in Hargrave's 4-3 system, he still has a lot of talent and should become a significant contributor at outside linebacker in the 3-4 - if not this year, then certainly down the road. With Albert, Crawford and Hall being admitted, this means that UVa's entire 2005 class has qualified and will be at UVa this year.
Also, as reported by TheSabre.com earlier this week, RB Andrew Pearman plans to enroll at UVa next month. Pearman, who is transferring from Hawaii, is currently taking classes at a community college in North Carolina. He plans to wrap up several classes there before heading to UVa. Pearman will have to sit out the 2005 season, but will have three years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2006.

Today's SabreMail is brought to you by the Charlottesville - Albemarle Airport (CHO).
This is one of those sponsorships that is a perfect fit for the Sabre community. Many of you don't live close to Charlottesville but frequently visit to attend games and reunions. If you normally fly into Washington or Richmond, why not check into flying directly into C'Ville? It's super-convenient and the fares are often just as good (if not better) than other airports in the area. When I was a UVa student many moons ago, it was a rinky-dink airport that I rarely used. But things are way different now. The terminal is beautiful, thanks to major architectural upgrades. The airport staff is friendly and efficient. And a bunch of airlines (Delta, United, US Airways and Northwest) offer convenient flights to such destinations as Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Orlando, Charlotte, Dallas, Detroit, Washington, Cincinnati, Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco. So next time you're planning a trip to Charlottesville, please check out the Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport (CHO) website to get information about flights and fares.
Thank you for actively supporting the sponsors of TheSabre.com. Sponsorships are a critical component of our business and sponsors' success will permit us to continually improve our services to you, our community.

Countdown clock now on home page Football season kicks off in just over two months. For you football junkies, we have a countdown clock on the home page that ticks away down to the second. Currently, no kickoff time has been set for UVA's home opener against Western Michigan. I've chosen 3:00PM as the kickoff time until the official time is released. Sabre Edge articles and columns from the past week
A year ago today, I wrote a column welcoming Virginia Tech to the ACC. In an otherwise cheerful hello to our new conference neighbors to the southwest, I helpfully pointed out that the Hokies would lose - often and badly - in nearly every sport during their first year in the league. For some reason, it wasn't roundly appreciated. Well, a year later, after examining the results of Year One and having received several ill-tempered e-mails from loyal Tech supporters, I must say, with all due respect, humility and graciousness: I was right.
As UVa's starting quarterback in 1991, Matt Blundin led the ACC in passing efficiency and threw 224 passes without an interception. He was picked in the second round by the Kansas City Chiefs and played for the Chiefs, Bears and Lions. He currently teaches and coaches at Monticello High School in Charlottesville. In this installment of "Ask the Experts," Matt answers five of your questions about QB play, including how to read defenses, the different challenges at each level of football, the significance of height and the difficulty of teaching high school players.
If the Cavaliers are going to have a successful 2005 football season and contend for the ACC championship, a few things will have to happen. Let's take a close look at some of the things that may make or break the season for the Wahoos, starting with the line play on both sides of the ball.
Every team in the ACC has talented players, valuable players, important players. But which players will make the biggest impact in the conference in 2005? We've already discussed the top five "impact" players in the senior & junior classes. Let's continue with the sophomores.
PEARMAN, "The Jaguars keep all of the rookies in a hotel until the summer workouts are done and we break from our OTAs (organized team activities). I'm renting an apartment for the season and we'll see how things go. Once I get a better feel for things I'll look for something more permanent. I was really surprised about how similar the [Jaguars] operation was run to what coach Groh had in place the last four years. There are a lot of similarities. When coach Groh said he was running an NFL operation at Virginia, he wasn't lying."
