Hello Wahoos! With no Cavalier sporting events there usually isn't much to talk about this time of year, but that wasn't the case this week. The football program received yet another commitment to its 2006 recruiting class, linebacker Mark Herzlich, pushing to the total number of verbals to six. The 'Hoos also added a punter to their 2005 recruiting class when Ryan Weigand elected to transfer from Pasadena City College. Also this week, the men's hoops program completed its coaching staff, adding an assistant coach and an operations director. As discussed in last week's SabreMail, John Galinsky is gallivanting in Europe and will return sometime in early July. But that hasn't stopped us from providing you some excellent features while he's gone. Please review this edition of SabreMail and catch up on the 'Hoos and everything that's new on TheSabre.com this week.

This Week In Recruiting Football recruiting... Virginia added two more players this week - one to the 2005 class and the other for 2006. Pasadena City College (Pasadena, CA) punter Ryan Weigand became the 24th member of UVa's 2005 recruiting class. In search of another punter, the Cavs scoured the nation this spring until they found Weigand, a 6-1 1/2, 175-pound prospect who averaged 40.3 yards per punt last season. Weigand, who had originally committed to Tulsa but did not sign any scholarship papers, visited Virginia last week and decided to go with the Wahoos. Here is an excerpt from the Q&A session we had with Ryan earlier this week.
TheSabre.com: What do the Virginia coaches like the most about you? Weigand had qualified academically coming out of high school, which means he'll be able to transfer to UVa and have immediate eligibility. He only played one year for PCC, so he'll have three years of eligibility remaining. Coach Groh and company continued their run of 2006 verbal commitments this week, when 6-4, 240-pound Conestoga (Wayne, PA) inside linebacker recruit Mark Herzlich (pronounced Hertz-lick) came aboard. Herzlich chose the 'Hoos over Boston College and also has offers from Duke, Louisville and Vanderbilt. As a junior last season, Herzlich racked up 145 tackles including three sacks. He plays inside linebacker in Conestoga's 5-2 defense, which is similar to Virginia's 3-4. Besides his intelligence (4.5 GPA, 1320 SAT), Herzlich is intense, athletic (he also plays lacrosse) and very strong - he benched 185 pounds 29 times at the Nike camp at PSU earlier this year. Herzlich gives the Cavs a second inside linebacker recruit in the 2006 class, with Trenton Central (Trenton, N.J.) star Almondo Sewell being the other. A few of UVa's quarterback prospects may make their respective commitments this summer. Downingtown East (Exton, PA) signal caller Pat Devlin made trips to Miami and Michigan in recent weeks and is now deciding whether or not he needs to visit any other schools this summer. He is also deciding whether he will commit this summer or take the recruiting process into the fall. Virginia is in solid shape, with Miami and Michigan very likely being the top competition here. Bishop McDevitt (Harrisburg, PA) quarterback Jeremy Ricker will almost definitely have a decision this summer, perhaps as early as next month. UVa is not in the top two or three schools. UVa will host a 7-on-7 pass skill tournament tomorrow. One team scheduled to attend is Blue Ridge School, with 6-2, 198-pound CB/S prospect Greg Davis. Davis, who is high on the 'Hoos, was told by coach Al Groh that he is their number one safety prospect. Mark Herzlich is one of many prospects who will attend UVa's summer camp, which begins this Sunday. Bishop McDevitt (Harrisburg, PA) 6-7, 310-pound offensive tackle recruit Tucker Baumbach is another excellent Pennsylvania prospect supposed to attend. Also, Westmont Hilltop (Johnstown, PA) athlete Brad Kanuch will be in Charlottesville for a visit this weekend. |
