Recruiting News |
This Week In Recruiting By Chris Horne Football recruiting... UVa will host a blue-chip day on Saturday. This is where the coaches invite a number of the "top targets" to grounds for a tour, the chance to talk to the coaches, etc. Last year's edition incredibly well, with the Cavs coming away with several commitments including Eugene Monroe, rated by some as the top overall player in the 2005 class. A few players we know are planning to attend include Orange NT Asa Chapman, Deep Run DE/TE Sean Gottschalk (right) and Malvern Prep (PA) athlete Trey Womack. Linden High School (N.J.) athlete O'Neil Thomas may be there according to Asa Chapman, and Robert E. Lee defensive end/outside linebacker J.R. Ware has been invited but I am not sure if he will be able to attend. We'll try to gather as many names as possible before this weekend. Any other names we find out we'll be sure to post on the Sabre Edge message board. -- According to Granby head coach Dave Hudak, 6-3, 205-pound wide receiver Chris Bell will likely not make the trip tomorrow. UVa has been able to gain back the ground they lost when Mike London, Bell's former primary recruiter, left for the Houston Texans. London had developed an excellent relationship with Bell and his family before leaving and his departure hurt UVa initially. "Everything's fine," Hudak said. Bell, who is rated #2 on TheSabre.com Pre-Summer Top 30 list, has close to 30 Division 1-A scholarship offers. SEC powers Florida and LSU are among the new teams to enter the picture during last month. Michigan, North Carolina, Penn State, Virginia and Virginia Tech are among the other schools to offer as well. -- UVa is no longer under consideration for two of the state of Virginia's top wide receiver prospects. Landstown star Percy Harvin and FUMA's Brandon Caleb have each removed the Cavs from consideration. UVa did make the cut for Landstown wide receiver Damon McDaniel, who cut his list to 9 schools. -- Once again, Cavalier fans, don't forget about the Good Samaritan Bowl tomorrow! UVa football recruits Kevin Crawford and Alex Field are scheduled to play in the game, which takes place on June 11th. The game features some of the top class of 2005 players from around the greater Baltimore/Washington area. Other recruits scheduled to participate include Virginia Tech quarterback Ike Whitaker, Maryland defensive end Melvin Alaeze and Maryland cornerback Jamari McCollough. Crawford, Field and Whitaker will play for the West squad, while Alaeze and McCollough will play for the East. Field is listed as a TE/DE while Crawford is listed as an OL/DL. The all-star game will be played at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland. Parking gates open at 10 a.m., doors open at 4 p.m. and kickoff is at 6 p.m. Ticket and contact information can be found at www.goodsamaritanbowl.com.

Post of the Week
Subject: Next year's outlook: The QBs
To me, the big question mark for Hagans next year relates to whether the system will be adapted to make the best use of his talents. For example, you cannot ignore the facts that Hagans throws a tremendous deep ball, and taking that strength away from him hurts him in a number of different areas. It tightens the field, limiting his scrambling. It causes tighter underneath coverage. And, perhaps most importantly, it impacts a player's confidence. My sense is that the staff has recognized the need to put Hagans in the best chance to succeed, and my sense from Hagans is that he has no intention of letting his last year go by without taking his shot on the field. I love that attitude.
Olsen is what he is, a decent QB with limited upside. He cannot make all of the throws that Hagans can, but he can move a team down the field if all goes right on a drive. Frankly, my evaluation of Olsen is probably not a fair one. Sometimes a coach just looks at a player in the pocket and just doesn't get that sense of confidence you have to have in your own QB. Olsen does that for me. I always feel like he would like to check down to a safer throw. I may be entirely unfair in this evaluation, given that it is more gut feeling than anything else, and I accept that fact. But my gut feeling is what it is. I felt like Deke took a step back this spring or, maybe more precisely, did not stay on the same growth curve I saw in fall practices. Overall, he is not a guy that is going to wow you with his physical attributes. In a way, McCabe, Olsen, and Deke are cut from the same cloth in that respect (though McCabe probably has a little more natural talent than the other guys), as you almost get the sense that Groh is looking for his next Phil Simms. Deke has good touch on the ball, and his arm strength has improved. He is surprisingly nimble with his footwork when he is not nervous, and probably is the best athlete of the three in that regard. Overall, the back-up situation is a little troubling. I have the most confidence in McCabe's ability to step up in the event of an injury to Hagans, but the truth is that the development of the back-ups has not been such that anyone can have steadfast confidence that we could lose Hagans without missing a beat.
In Hall, you have a guy with tremendous athleticism, a great arm, and the ability to lead a team. In other words, you have Hagans, only faster and a touch taller. Hall's success at the HS level should not be ignored because of the class he was in. On the camp circuit, Hall showed he could compete, and there is something to be said for the demonstrated ability to win. Others may see Hall as a natural WR. Although I think he will take snaps there in the fall, I am not willing to say he will stay there. The kid is a very good QB. Sewell, on the other hand, was not high on my list going into his senior year of HS. I did not like how his mechanics tended to break down, or his tendency to drift in the pocket when there was no need to drift. His decision-making also left a lot to be desired. But Sewell impressed me tremendously his senior year, and I admit that I am not one to let go of first impressions easily. Sewell's mechanics were much more consistent, particularly when he was throwing on the run. His decision-making was improved. And his tools, which were there before, remained. Sewell has plenty of arm (though he is not in Hall's class there), and throws with good touch. He throws a nice deep ball with plenty of air under it, and while not a sprinter, he is mobile and able to make some people miss. He reminds me a lot of a young Jeff Blake, and that is not a bad comparison at all. Given what I have seen of the current back-ups, I have to say that I would not be at all surprised to see either Hall or Sewell make a leap on the depth chart when the battle comes to replace Hagans next year. Sabre Edge articles and columns from the past week
The baseball team's season ended abruptly in the NCAA tournament last weekend with a one-run loss in the bottom of the ninth. The week before that, the men's lacrosse team's season concluded on an overtime goal in the NCAA semifinals. The women's rowing team finished a few seconds shy of a national championship, while the women's lacrosse team led five different times in the NCAA title game before losing. The football team was a few plays away from going 10-2 or 11-1. So was it a year of "Close, but not quite." in Cavalier sports?
Eight players from the state of Virginia's 2006 class have received over 10 Division 1-A scholarship offers, with seven of those eight having around 20 or more. Virginia's top talent has drawn a significant amount of top out-of-state interest, with schools from most of the major conferences coming in to extend offers. In terms of position, wide receivers are the class of this year's class. Five WRs are ranked among the top 15 prospects, including three in the top five and four in the top 10. Headlining at number one overall is none other than Landstown's Percy Harvin.
Former UVa head coach George Welsh, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, rejoins us to answer more of your questions about college football. In this installment of "Ask the Experts," he tackles the following questions: 1) How much did your offense change when you had a mobile quarterback as opposed to a pure pocker passer? 2) What was your favorite (and least favorite) part of being a college head coach? 3) How significant is home-field advantage, and how does UVa's advantage compare to others in the ACC?
Everyone has heard the adage that "defense wins championships," especially in relation to football. A quick look at the statistics reveals the same is true of college baseball. The best defensive teams often end up in Omaha playing in the College World Series. That bodes well for Virginia, which is among the top fielding teams in the NCAA tournament. Why are shortstop Mike Campagna and the Cavs so good with their gloves? What makes them exceptional fielders? And how much might that matter this month?
