Historically, Memorial Day weekend has marked the finish line for UVa athletics. It's the weekend of the NCAA men's lacrosse Final Four as well as the NCAA women's rowing championships and the ACC baseball tournament. By the start of June, the sports school year has typically run its course for all of the Cavalier teams. Time for Wahoo fans to hit the beach, take a few months off and start thinking about football season.
The way things are looking, though, June baseball may be an annual occurrence (or close to it) for the 'Hoos. With eight straight wins, including two so far in the ACC tournament, Virginia (40-17) is a sure bet to earn its second straight NCAA tourney bid - an unprecedented feat for the program. Last year the Cavaliers hosted an NCAA subregional and finished with 44 wins. Remember, this is a team that never won more than 29 games in the six seasons prior to 2004 and finished with a losing record in ACC play for 15 straight years. Who's responsible for the rise of UVa baseball? Brian O'Connor, obviously. In just his second year as head coach, he has transformed Virginia's program from an ACC also-ran to a national contender. Greg Waters wrote an in-depth profile of the coach for Edge subscribers this week. In the article, two of his former mentors at Creighton and Notre Dame explain What Makes Brian O'Connor a Winner? Because of that, Virginia fans also are winners because they get at least another week or two to root for the 'Hoos. If O'Connor and company can keep this up, June won't be quite so dull around here any longer.

Recruiting News |
This Week In Recruiting By Chris Horne Football recruiting... Last Friday, Queen of Peace (N.J.) outside linebacker/defensive end recruit Mike Gee stated that he plans on visiting his top five schools this summer. His top five include Louisville, North Carolina, Rutgers, Virginia and Virginia Tech. Not only is it significant that Gee, who is one of the top defensive players in New Jersey, plans on visiting UVa, but the date of his planned visit is also significant. Gee is hoping to visit Charlottesville on June 11th, which will be UVa's second installment of "Blue Chip" day. This day is designed to get some of UVa's top targets on grounds at one time. Last year's day was a huge success, as the Cavaliers landed commitments from LB/DE Antonio Appleby, OL Eugene Monroe and WR Kevin Ogletree just a few days after the experience. CB Mike Brown would commit a few weeks later. RB Mikell Simpson, who attended as well, would later sign with Virginia. Robert E. Lee (Staunton, VA) standout defensive end/ outside linebacker J.R. Ware also may attend, according to head coach David Tibbs. TheSabre.com will release a list of recruits a few days before the event and will follow up with comments from recruits immediately following. -- According to Robinson head coach Mark Bendorf, OLB Olu Hall has attained the SAT score needed to gain admission into UVa. Hall, who was rated the number one prospect in the state coming out of Robinson in the 2004 class, prepped at Hargrave Military Academy this year. Bendorf expects his former star to be in Charlottesville this summer. TheSabre.com will try and reach Hargrave head coach Robert Prunty for further confirmation. -- UVa football recruits Kevin Crawford and Alex Field are scheduled to play in the Good Samaritan Bowl, which takes place on June 11th. The game features some of the top class of 2005 players from around the greater Baltimore/Washington area. Other recruits scheduled to participate include Virginia Tech quarterback Ike Whitaker, Maryland defensive end Melvin Alaeze and Maryland cornerback Jamari McCollough. Crawford, Field and Whitaker will play for the West squad, while Alaeze and McCollough will play for the East. Field is listed as a TE/DE while Crawford is listed as an OL/DL. The all-star game will be played at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland. Parking gates open at 10 a.m., doors open at 4 p.m. and kickoff is at 6 p.m. Ticket and contact information can be found at www.goodsamaritanbowl.com.

Sabre Edge articles and columns from the past week
Virginia has won three NCAA men's lacrosse titles, and those championship teams had one common denominator: a dominant midfielder. Pete Eldredge (1972) and Chris Rotelli (2003) earned national player of the year honors, while Jay Jalbert (1999) was named national midfielder of the year. So, as the Cavaliers go for title #4 this weekend, the question isn't whether they have the nation's top middie. They don't. Nor do they have the top midfield unit. Johns Hopkins does. What it may come down to is this: Is UVa's midfield good enough?
Bruce McGonnigal, an All-ACC player for the Cavs in 1989, answers your questions about tight end play, including: What do you think of the re-revolution of the TE position over the past few years? Do you think the TE is a big wide receiver or a lineman with hands? How did Gary Tranquill and Coach Welsh create matchup advantages for the TE position? When preparing for a game, which player on the defense got the majority of your attention - the OLB, SS, DE or someone else? Can TEs operate as effectively vs. a nickel or dime defense?
UVa fans already know that Brian O'Connor is the man who has transformed Cavalier baseball, winning 82 games (and counting) in two seasons while injecting energy, enthusiasm and optimism into a historically mediocre program. But what is his background? What's his personality? Why is he such an outstanding recruiter and coach? Two of his mentors from Creighton and Notre Dame shed some light on what makes O'Connor so successful.
When thinking about the hotspots of high school football talent in the United States, the Commonwealth of Virginia does not initially come to mind. Florida, Texas and California, with their large populations, are regarded as the most fertile recruiting grounds in the country. However, if you are going to base a state's high school talent on the success of the in-state programs, Virginia is only behind these three states. And the success of UVa and Virginia Tech in keeping the best players in the state, such as Vic Hall, has paid big dividends over the past decade.
BALTIMORE, Md. - Last year can officially be called an aberration for the Virginia men's lacrosse team. The Cavaliers are back in their accustomed place among the national elite - the Final Four. In a hard-fought affair at sun-splashed Homewood Field, the fourth-seeded Wahoos scored the final two goals to earn a 10-8 victory over fifth-seeded Navy in the NCAA quarterfinals today. UVa (11-3) advanced to the Final Four for the eighth time in 12 years and will face #1 Johns Hopkins in next Saturday's semifinals in Philadelphia.
