For some people, the end of spring football marks the end of the college sports calendar. That's fine if you're strictly a football-basketball guy.

Doug Stewart leads the #2 tennis team into the NCAAs.

But if you're a fan who cares about the full spectrum of Cavalier sports, this is an exciting time of year. The men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, men's golf, women's golf, men's tennis and women's rowing teams have all qualified for NCAA postseason play. This weekend features a spring sports smorgasbord in Charlottesville. The baseball team has a crucial three-game series with #4 Miami at Davenport. Men's lacrosse has a first-round NCAA game on Saturday at Klockner, while women's lacrosse hosts an NCAA quarterfinal on Sunday. And men's tennis hosts an NCAA regional today and tomorrow at Sheridan Snyder.

We wrote features for Edge subscibers on the rise of the men's tennis program, the legacy of lacrosse players John Christmas and Amy Appelt and the critical homestretch for the baseball team. We'll have more coverage throughout the month as the Wahoos pile up Sears Cup points. Of course, if you just don't care about that stuff, don't worry. There's always football recruiting.

    This Week In Recruiting
    By Chris Horne

    Football recruiting...

Asheville (NC) athlete Crezdon Butler and Good Counsel (Wheaton, MD) wide receiver/defensive end Drew Gloster have received offers from UVa.

The 6-1, 175-pound Butler plays quarterback and cornerback for head coach Danny Wilkins. Butler, who has excellent speed, projects as an athlete with the ability to play several different positions. According to Wilkins, UVa was very impressed with Butler's demeanor and personality when the star rising senior paid a visit to Charlottesville for a junior day.

In addition to UVa, Butler is considering offers from, in no particular order, North Carolina, N.C. State, Wake Forest, Maryland, South Carolina, Arkansas, Nebraska and Clemson. Coach Wilkins says Clemson, North Carolina and Virginia are Butler's three favorites right now.

Gloster picked up an offer from the Cavs very recently. At 6-4, 220 pounds, he was hand-time at 4.53 in the 40-yard dash during last week's Elite combine in New Jersey. Gloster also boasts offers from Miami, Penn State, Ohio State, Syracuse, Virginia Tech and West Virginia, among others. He says he doesn't know much about the 'Hoos right now, but may take a visit this summer.

    Basketball recruiting...

    Duke Crews

Bethel star power forward Duke Crews was extremely impressive in the low post during last weekend's Southern Invitational. The 6-6, 220-pound prospect boasts offers from Florida State, Georgetown, St. John's, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Xavier, but hasn't narrowed his list. Crews says he has heard from new UVa coach Dave Leitao.

    --

Woodside's dual-sport star Stefan Welsh will take his talents - at least in basketball - to Hargrave Military Academy. Welsh, who claims offers from Florida and UVa in football, had no comment when asked if he planned on playing both football and basketball at Hargrave. He also had no comment when asked which sport he would play in college.

The 6-2, 175-pound Welsh has taken an official visit to Xavier for basketball. He claims offers from Virginia and Virginia Tech, among others, as well for basketball.

    Post of the Week

Optimism abounds in this post on the Edge board...

    Subject: You just gotta believe
Posted by: Cavs4ever on Tue May 10 2005 5:01:36 PM
Message: I believe that this year we will have an incredible football team and will win 10 games. We will beat at least 1 "powerhouse" team. Arguments can be made that youth, inexperience, injuries and the like will prevent this. I believe that somehow, someway we will rise above those potential shortcomings. I believe that players will step up, in many cases these will be players that might not be expected to do so this soon. I believe that a few freshmen will make an impact. Maybe not the entire year but, when called on. I know that a few guys who are on the edge of greatness will have career years. There will be a team and fan base spirit that will be contagious. After game posts will be very positive and celebratory. The losses will not deflate us, they will be considered part of the big picture. We will play in a great bowl on real green grass and, it will be warm. Our early impressive start will win over some recruits that we would like to have. I believe it (this season) will be the beginning of a solid, consistent era of dominence for UVA.

    You gotta believe.

    Around the Wahoo sports world...

Sabre Edge articles and columns from the past week

  • Cavs Find Themselves in a Precarious Position, Greg Waters

Image: Coach Brian O'ConnorWith just two weekends remaining before the ACC baseball tournament, the seedings are starting to clarify a little. Miami, North Carolina and Georgia Tech will battle for the ACC regular-season crown, while Maryland, Duke and Virginia Tech in all probability will be relegated to the four-team ACC mini-tournament. The only real question remaining is who will join the Terps, Hokies and Blue Devils. Unfortunately, the 'Hoos are in the mix.

  • What Will Be Their Lacrosse Legacy?, Bayless Parsley

Image: John ChristmasWhen the two lacrosse phenoms rode into Charlottesville in the fall of 2001, a mountain of expectations preceded them. Each was the No. 1 recruit in America. Both had been on their coach's radar screen since junior high. Now, nearly four years later, they've both seen their share of success - he won a title his sophomore year, while she did the same a season later. But time is running out, and both desperately want another championship before it's all over. For John Christmas and Amy Appelt, these NCAAs represent one last shot at immortality.

  • Ask The Experts: Shawn Moore, TheSabre.com

Image: Shawn MooreShawn Moore, one of the greatest players in UVa history, answers five of your questions about the QB position, including: Why was UVa's vertical passing game so effective when you were here? What was your technique on alley-oop passes to Herman? When did you truly feel comfortable as a college quarterback? Is the importance of the QB position overstated? And what are the attributes that make someone a Hall of Fame quarterback?

  • Tennis, Anyone? Sport Now a Love Match at UVa, John Galinsky

Image: Doug StewartVirginia didn't become a men's tennis powerhouse overnight. It only seems that way. In truth, it took some time and a number of important events to turn a historically mediocre program into one of the nation's best. From facilities to coaches to players, UVa tennis has undergone dramatic upgrades in recent years. Now Brian Boland's program may be the athletic department's best example of its stated commitment to excellence.

  • The Coaching Search: What Went Right, What Didn't, Rob Mahini (Vandy-Hoo)

Image: UVA AD Craig LittlepageThe secrecy shrouding Virginia's coaching search makes it difficult to analyze. It's impossible to fully know Craig Littlepage and John Casteen's actual actions. The best we can do is gather the press accounts and sift through it all to judge how things went. Having said that, some of their decisions and actions can be scrutinized. For instance, should we have targeted Tubby Smith at all? Was the media managed correctly? Should we have been so hung up on head coaching experience?

  • The Toughest (and Easiest) Schedules in the ACC, Greg Waters

The 2005 ACC football schedules are out and TheSabre.com breaks them down. Who plays the easiest schedule? Who plays the toughest? Who got the biggest breaks with the league schedule? Whose nonconference slates seem a tad light? How difficult is Virginia's schedule compared to the rest of the league? We rank all 12 teams on strength of schedule, using our foolproof scientific methodology.
