UVa AD Craig Littlepage

I must say I'm baffled why so many people on the message boards seem to have little faith in Craig Littlepage's ability to find a new men's basketball coach. If you want, fault UVa's athletic director for not firing Gillen last year. Blame him for some of Virginia's bowl fiascos in recent years. But when it comes to coaching searches, not many ADs have a better track record than 'Page.

As an associate AD, he played a major role in hiring Dom Starsia as men's lacrosse coach. Starsia has led the Cavs to two national championships. In four years as athletic director, he has hired three head coaches: Jan Mann, who has made the fledgling women's golf program competitive in just a few years; Brian Boland, who has turned men's tennis into a national power; and Brian O'Connor, who led the baseball team to its best season in his inaugural year.

Granted, there is a lot more riding on this men's basketball hire, and that's probably why so many fans are anxious right now. But as a former college basketball player and coach, and as next year's head of the NCAA tournament selection committee, Littlepage is respected and extremely well-connected in basketball circles. There's no guarantee he will end up getting his first choice (or second, or third) and it's no sure bet the new coach will succeed in the brutal ACC, but that would be true no matter who was spearheading the search.

For my money - and, more importantly, for the millions of dollars being poured into the men's basketball program - there's no one I'd rather have in charge of this process than Craig Littlepage.

    This Week In Recruiting
    By Chris Horne

    Football recruiting...

    Andrew Pearman

Andrew Pearman reaffirmed his intentions of enrolling at UVa this fall. A 5-9, 170-pound running back out of Providence High School (Charlotte, N.C), the speedy Pearman signed with the University of Hawaii in 2004 after originally committing to UVa. He left Hawaii after just one semester and is currently taking classes at a community college in Charlotte. He plans to finish his classes by late June or early July, at which point he expects to finalize his transfer.

Since leaving high school, Pearman, who has been timed at 4.28 in the 40-yard dash, says he has gained 12 pounds of muscle. He is training extremely hard and looks forward to getting to UVa. He will have to sit out one season before he can become eligible to play.

This week UVa offered Blue Ridge School star Greg Davis. Davis is a 6-3, 190-pound cornerback/wide receiver for Blue Ridge but could end up playing safety on the next level. Davis says that UVa likes him as a free safety. Other schools that have officially offered scholarships include Kansas, Maryland, Nebraska and Virginia Tech.

Blue Ridge features two other potential Division 1-A prospects in 6-2, 180-pound wide receiver Tony Lewis and 6-0, 220-pound running back/linebacker Trey Mines. Both are stars in basketball as well. Of the two, Lewis, who runs a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash according to Blue Ridge coach Mike Alley, may have the best shot at a Division 1-A offer.

       News, Notes and Fan Discussion

    'Hoos hot in UVa sports?

Freshman Sean Doolittle has been a sensation on the mound and at the plate.

There are plenty of hot teams in Cavalier athletics right now. Women's lacrosse is 5-1 and ranked #4 in the country. Men's tennis is 14-2 and ranked #2. Men's swimming and diving won its seventh straight ACC title and is competing in the NCAA meet.

But at the moment, no teams are hotter than baseball and men's lacrosse.

After an 8-6 start, Brian O'Connor's baseball team has won nine straight games heading into this weekend's three-game series at Virginia Tech. And they haven't just been winning - they've been winning big. The combined score of those nine games has been 70-16. The pitching staff already has seven shutouts this season, a school record, while young sluggers Sean Doolittle and Brandon Guyer have added much-needed power at the 4 and 5 spots in the batting order.

Dom Starsia's lacrosse team, meanwhile, has won all six of its games this season after going 5-8 a year ago. The Cavs are healthy again, the offense is clicking and sophomore goalie Kip Turner is one of many players enjoying a breakthrough season. The 'Hoos, ranked #2, will take on #1 Johns Hopkins tomorrow in Baltimore.

  • How the 'Hoos Got Back on Top, John Galinsky

Image: John ChristmasIt's only March and the lacrosse season is barely half over, but already Virginia has won more games than it did in all of 2004. So how does a team go from 5-8 one season to 6-0 (and counting) the next? Well, lots of reasons. A few key newcomers. Better health. Some emerging stars. Most importantly, perhaps, more confidence and chemistry, plus a better attitude. The result, says senior attackman John Christmas, is “it's starting to feel a little reminiscent of two years ago.” In 2003, of course, the Cavaliers were national champs.

  • Youth Serving Power, Pitching for Cavs, Greg Waters

Image: Sean DoolittleBrian O'Connor came to Virginia with a strong reputation as a recruiter, and his first batch of signees is already making its mark for the Cavaliers. Among the freshmen who have contributed heavily to UVa's 17-6 start and nine-game winning streak are Sean Doolittle, Brandon Guyer and Robert Poutier. That trio has given the Cavs much of the power and pitching they so desperately needed this season.

  • An (Extremely) Early Look at the ACC, Nick Sauer

As Virginia gets ready to start spring football practice next Friday, now seems like a good time to look ever further ahead to the fall and analyze the new ACC in 2005. The advent of the dual-division conference and championship game should make for the most exciting year ever in the ACC. Here is how I see things panning out for Virginia and the 11 other teams...

  • Gophers Deliver Knockout Blow to Cavs, John Galinsky

With a little over 14 minutes left in Monday night's game, Virginia's LaTonya Blue was flattened by a screen set at midcourt by Minnesota's giant center, Janel McCarville. Before long, the Cavaliers found themselves knocked out of the NCAA women's basketball tournament. As a woozy Blue watched from the bench, the third-seeded Gophers went on a 12-0 run to take command of their second-round game at Williams Arena in Minneapolis. The sixth-seeded Cavs never recovered and lost 73-58, ending their season with a 21-11 record.

  • Wahoo Women Win in NCAA First Round, John Galinsky

Image: Coach Debbie RyanVirginia's performance tonight in the NCAA women's basketball tournament was worth a two-year wait. The sixth-seeded Cavaliers dominated 11th-seeded Old Dominion 79-57 at the Williams Center in Minneapolis, advancing to the second round of the Tempe Regional. The Wahoos failed to qualify for the NCAA tourney last year for the first time in 20 years. After a slow start tonight, they shot 65% in the second half, controlled the boards and got big games from Brandi Teamer (23 points, 10 rebounds) and Tiffany Sardin (16 points, six rebounds).
