My apologies for this abbreviated version of SabreMail, but you have to understand. I'm a busy man today. I have 12 hours of basketball to watch.

It's ACC tournament quarterfinal Friday, and if there's a better day than this for a college basketball fan, I don't know what it is. Four great games (well, let's hope two or three of them are great), all in one place, all in one noon to midnight time slot. And here I am in Washington with a press pass, a hoops addiction and, unfortunately, a SabreMail to churn out with just a few minutes to go before the North Carolina-Clemson tipoff.

So forgive me for slacking a little bit. I need to head over to MCI Center and catch the Hokies and Yellow Jackets at 2:30, the Demon Deacons and Wolfpack at 7 and, last but not least, our Wahoos taking on the Dookies at 9:30. Then I'll need to stick around and write a story, plus spend my weekend watching the semifinals and final.

I know, tough job. But someone's gotta do it.

    This Week In Recruiting
    By Chris Horne

    Basketball recruiting...

UVa men's basketball recruit Mamadi Diane posted 20 points and 16 rebounds as DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) captured the City Title game in a 84-58 blowout victory over Cardoza earlier this week. Diane posted 14 of his 20 in the second quarter in helping his team to a 41-28 halftime lead.

DeMatha (27-1) captured the WCAC regular season title with an undefeated 13-0 conference record. The Stags also won the WCAC tournament championship when they defeated defending champ OConnell last week. Up next is the Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament in Frostburg, Maryland. The event begins on Thursday, March 17th.

Diane has enjoyed an excellent senior season, earning WCAC first-team all-conference honors for his performance. The 6-5, 180-pound wing forward, who signed with UVa in November of last year, has averaged 13.4 points per game.

Sabre Edge articles and columns from the past week

  • Cavalier Comeback Keeps Season Alive, John Galinsky

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Pete Gillen lives to coach another day. Showing "courage and confidence and togetherness," as Gillen described it, the Cavaliers - not exactly known for those attributes this season - overcame an eight-point deficit in the final 10 minutes and defeated Miami 66-65 in the first round of the ACC men's basketball tournament tonight at MCI Center. Gillen jumped into the air and raised his arms when Hurricane guard Anthony Harris's 3-pointer bounced off the rim at the end, knowing his UVa coaching career wasn't quite over yet.

  • 'Hoos Suffering From Power Outage, Greg Waters

Image: Ryan ZimmermanIn 2004, Virginia completed one of the most magical seasons in its baseball history. And with the return of a strong pitching staff (3.63 ERA last year) and a slick-fielding defensive unit (.973 - second in the ACC), many expected another magical year in 2005. But there was plenty of uncertainty to open the season, especially on offense. That uncertainty has turned into borderline panic as the Cavaliers have experienced some troubling early-season numbers.

  • Hoops Autopsy: What Killed UVa's Season, John Galinsky

Image: Jason ClarkHow did the Cavaliers go from a top-20 team in November to the worst team in the ACC by March? To be sure, it wasn't any single thing. It was a combination of things - injuries, attrition, poor leadership, fractured chemistry and increasing discord within the program. With the help of a few well-placed sources, I'll try to examine Virginia's slide from prosperity to mediocrity and pinpoint the factors that poisoned a once-promising season. Call it the anatomy of a lost season. Or, in this case, more of an autopsy. This is the coroner's report.

  • Cavalier Thoughts on the ACC Tournament, TheSabre.com

Image: Coach Pete GillenUVa coach Pete Gillen discusses his team's mindset heading into the ACC tournament. He also talks about the first-round matchup with Miami, his recent personnel decisions, the shooting struggles of J.R. Reynolds and some of the Cavaliers' biggest problems this season. Also included in this audio feature are interviews with Elton Brown and Sean Singletary.

  • Jeffrey Fitzgerald: Mad About Football, Greg Waters

Image: Jeffrey FitzgeraldA suggestion for Virginia's future football opponents: Don't make Jeffrey Fitzgerald mad. When the 6-3, 245-pound defensive end gets riled up, he just becomes that much harder to handle. "Jeffrey's the kind of kid we want to get angry before the game," said Pat Kane, Fitzgerald's coach at Richmond's Hermitage High School, a recent UVa pipeline. "He's the kind of player that if he gets fired up, if somebody crosses him they're in trouble [on the football field]. We always hope somebody says the wrong thing to him on the field because then it's on."

  • Cavs End Up at Rock Bottom, John Galinsky

Image: Gary ForbesA regular season that started with such promise ended with Virginia in the cellar of the ACC. The Cavaliers earned the dubious distinction of being the first #11 seed in the ACC tournament by falling to Florida State 68-63 today at the Leon County Civic Center in Tallahassee. Their fifth straight loss gave them a 4-12 conference record and a tie for last with the Seminoles, who win the tiebreaker by virtue of their victory over Wake Forest. UVa, now 13-14 overall, must win two games in the league tourney to qualify for the NIT. Don't count on it. You can pretty much stick a fork in the Wahoos, who fell behind by 20 against a Seminole squad that had lost nine straight games. A second-half rally fell short, so the Pete Gillen era at Virginia figures to be over in a matter of days.
