Recruiting News |
This Week In Recruiting By Chris Horne Football recruiting... Hampton wide receiver Todd Nolen , the last remaining target on the board for the 2005 class, signed yesterday with Virginia Tech. He committed to the Hokies earlier in the week over UNC and UVa. With the 2005 class a wrap, the attention turns to the 2006 recruits. State champion Landstown High School boasts several top recruits for 2006, including Rivals.com #1 junior Percy Harvin and Rivals.com Top 100 player Damon McDaniel. Both players will be recruited as wide receivers. Harvin will have offers from virtually every top program in the country while McDaniel should boast double-digit Division I-A offers. UVa has offered both players. In addition to Harvin and McDaniel, UVa is showing early interest in Landstown defensive tackle Brandon Monroe. Monroe has not received any offers at this point. Other 2006 in-state players who have received UVa offers include Highland Springs linebacker Jarrell Miller, Westfield running back Evan Royster, Granby wide receiver Chris Bell and Meadowbrook defensive lineman John Graves. The Cavaliers are showing serious interest in many other prospects, including Hermitage wide receiver Griff Yancey and Liberty (Bedford) defensive tackle Daryl Robertson.

News, Notes and Fan Discussion |
Post of the Week This post was part of a thread on the Sabre Edge subscriber board discussing UVa's potential as a national power in football and basketball, and how academic standards help or hinder that possibility.

Cavaliers embark on the comeback trail
But coach Pete Gillen shook things up against N.C. State and Florida State, going with a smaller starting lineup and a slowdown approach on offense. The result was a pair of narrow victories: 64-62 at N.C. State and 56-55 at home against Florida State. Both games had dramatic conclusions. Sean Singletary's putback with 2.2 seconds left was the difference against the Wolfpack on Saturday. Four days later, Devin Smith's 3-pointer with 5.2 seconds left gave Virginia its only lead of the game. Will the revival continue? We'll see. Up next is a home game tomorrow at noon against Virginia Tech, followed by a trip to No. 2 North Carolina on Wednesday. For the Sabre's story on the N.C. State game, please see the link below.

Women's basketball has a rough week It was an important week for the women's basketball team. With home games against North Carolina and Miami, the Cavs had a chance to move up the ACC standings and solidify their NCAA tournament chances. Instead, they now find themselves in real trouble. Things started well on Monday when the Wahoos took a two-point halftime lead against No. 8 UNC, but they fell apart in the second half and lost 76-56. Unfortunately, the poor play continued Thursday against Miami, one of the worst teams in the ACC. Virginia lost 66-60, dropping its record to 16-8 overall and 5-5 in the ACC. "To me, (this loss) is devastating," said UVa coach Debbie Ryan. "I was really, really confident. It was not what I expected at all. I guess I was wrong. I was just shocked by the way we played." With four games left in the regular season, the Cavaliers now have their backs against the wall. Their only game in the upcoming week will be Sunday afternoon at Virginia Tech. For more information on UVa women's basketball, please see the link below.
It's All-Academic for six football players It would be hard to find a better representative of the University of Virginia than Heath Miller. He's a first-team All-American. He's a humble guy. And he's a heck of a student, too. Miller, a sociology major with a 3.30 GPA, was one of six Cavaliers named to the All-ACC academic football team this week. The others were seniors Zac Yarbrough and Jermaine Hardy, juniors Connor Hughes and Brennan Schmidt, and sophomore Marcus Hamilton. Busy weekend in UVa sports Coming off the best season in program history, UVa baseball opens its 2005 season this weekend with a three-game series at UNC-Wilmington. That's just part of a big weekend in Cavalier sports. The softball team also begins its season at the Triangle Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C. The men's tennis team plays host to Alabama and Indiana, while the women's tennis team hosts Penn. The track and field teams compete at the Virginia Tech Challenge. The wrestling team hosts N.C. State. The men's lacrosse team has a home scrimmage against Georgetown. Plus both basketball teams are in action. To see the entire UVa sports schedule, please see the link below.

Sabre Edge articles and columns from the past week
While some have everything given to them and always expect more, others work for their success and foster their personal development through dedication, sacrifice and a touch of humility. Branden Albert is certainly a young man who has earned his supper. At 6-7 and 310 pounds, one might say he has earned breakfast, lunch, dinner and possibly a dessert or two from time to time.
Are the Cardiac Cavaliers back again? Just like last year, the Virginia men's basketball team is showing a knack for late-season, late-game heroics. On Wednesday night the hero was Devin Smith, whose 3-pointer with 5.2 seconds left gave the Cavs a 56-55 victory over Florida State at University Hall. His shot from the right wing capped off a comeback from a 14-point deficit in the second half and gave UVa its only lead of the night. It also provided the second straight dramatic win for Virginia, which beat N.C. State four days earlier on a putback by Sean Singletary with 2.2 seconds remaining.
George Welsh never gained a reputation as a great recruiter, but he must have known what he was doing. He successfully recruited the likes of Terry Kirby, Chris Slade, Shawn Moore, Herman Moore and the Barber twins. He also accumulated enough talent to win 134 games in 19 years as UVa's head coach. So in this installment of "Ask the Experts," Welsh answers six of your questions about recruiting, including: How has recruiting changed since you entered coaching? What took place during official visits to UVa when you were head coach? What was your sales pitch during an in-home visit? And what were your most memorable "gets" and "misses" on the recruiting trail?
Coming off its most successful season in school history, the Virginia baseball program called on Hall of Fame manager Tommy Lasorda to help the team kick off the 2005 season at its second annual "Step Up to the Plate" event. The program was held at Memorial Gym on Friday night and included a ballpark-like dinner of hotdogs, apple pie and baked beans, interview sessions with players and Lasorda, as well as live and silent auctions.
