Don't you hate it when a fan starts spouting off about something and clearly doesn't know what he's talking about?. Don't you hate it when that fan is you? Well, in our quest to enlighten, inform and educate the Cavalier fan base, TheSabre.com unveiled a new feature this week called "Ask the Experts." The premise is for fans to ask questions about aspects of football and basketball that they would like to understand better - primarily about schemes, strategy, responsibilities, etc. Then we will find experts (mainly coaches and players) to provide the answers. We envision it as an ongoing course in Advanced Football and Advanced Basketball. The first installment was posted yesterday in the article "Ask the Experts: Coach Welsh," with former UVa coach George Welsh (you remember him, right?) tackling five questions related to the spread offense, important quarterback qualities, weather-related adjustments, Herman Moore's routes and the responsibility of a pulling guard on screen passes. Please check out the story and let me know what you think. Also, please email me with any questions you'd like to see answered by our experts. Just put "Ask the Experts" in the subject header and get ready to learn a thing or two. Class is in session.

This Week In Recruiting By Chris Horne Football recruiting...
Highland Springs (VA) star Victor "Macho" Harris was supposed to visit Virginia Tech this weekend as well, but may not following a kitchen accident earlier this week. Harris suffered third-degree burns on his arms and minor burns on his face in the accident and might not be able to make the trip to Blacksburg. He is expected to make a complete recovery from the injuries. UVa is turning up the pressure on 6-1, 185-pound tailback Mikell Simpson out of Harrisburg, PA. Coach Bob Price visited Simpson for three hours last Sunday. Last Friday, Coach Price and Coach Poindexter visited Harrisburg High School. Simpson's father said that Mikell was "impressed" with the heavy attention UVa has shown in recent weeks. Simpson is also considering Alabama and UCLA, among others. Top wide receiver prospect Todd Nolen has decided to wait to make his collegiate decision and will make official visits first. He has officials set to Penn State on January 14th, North Carolina on January 21st and Virginia Tech on January 28th. He says he "would like to" take an official visit to UVa, but has not set a date. UVa was considered the heavy favorite in recent weeks, but it appears as if Nolen is considering all four schools equally now. There are no recruits scheduled to be on campus this weekend. After this weekend, there is a recruiting dead period - meaning coaches cannot call or see recruits in person. The contact period starts back up the first week in January.

Post of the Week
Subject: Huge Thanks to Al Groh and the whole team for an unbelievable b-day present!!
So Josh and his mother, Karen, know that i am a huge UVA fan and they wanted to do something special for me for my birthday. Karen called the UVA Athletic Department and told the secretary about the relationship that Josh and I had and that Josh really wanted to do something special for me for my birthday. The secretary puts Karen on hold and the next thing Karen knows, she has Al Groh on the phone! Al told her that he would be more than glad to help out and to wait while he puts something together for her. For the last three weeks, Josh has been telling me how cool my birthday present is going to be and that i am going to flip out when i see it. Well, today Karen received a package in the mail from Al Groh, and i got the call in the office from Josh that my birthday present had finally arrived. I show up to Josh's house and Josh was holding my present; UVA sweatshirt autographed by every single memebr of the football team! I was blown away and at a total loss for words. It was by far the best present that i have ever gotten for two reasons; the first reason is that it really showed my how much this kid and his mother cared about me to go through this much trouble to get me a present that was truly special. And second, the fact that Al Groh and the team would take time to do this for a fan really meant a lot. I know that some of the team checks up on the Sabre so i just wanted to say thanks for making this a great birthday and that you now have two new fans for life, Josh and Karen. Go Hoos Golden apparently will stay at UVa
Speculation and rumors about his departure were rampant. The Boston Globe even reported that it was a done deal. Apparently not. Virginia's sports information department issued a press release this morning with this quote from Golden: "After a week of baseless speculation, I feel it is necessary to firmly state my commitment to being the defensive coordinator at Virginia. We have made great strides in a short time and I believe we are building something special. We came up a little short of our goal of a championship, but I am dedicated to help us finish with nine wins and a third straight bowl win. We have a great nucleus returning for 2005 that includes some players who have also made a similar commitment to be at Virginia, and I want to help them finish their careers on a high note." There was also a quote from Groh in the press release: "Al has done a marvelous job of molding our defensive players and systems. Finishing 11th in the country in scoring defense is evidence of that. He is a tremendous resource for us with a very bright future. I have high regard for his work and am thrilled by his enthusiasm for and confidence in the future of Virginia football." Big E, Big Money make All-America team Neither Elton Brown nor Heath Miller came to UVa four years ago as a blue-chip recruit. Neither was rated among the top 10 prospects in the state by various recruiting services, much less among the top prospects in the country.
Miller also earned the John Mackey Award as the nation's best tight end. He has 36 receptions for 475 yards and five touchdowns - numbers that pale next to his monster stats last season - but he has been the main receiving threat on a run-oriented team and also made a significant impact as a blocker.. Sophomore linebacker Ahmad Brooks, who leads the team with 85 tackles, was named a second-team All-American. Now the question is whether Miller, a redshirt junior, and Brooks will stick around or apply for the NFL draft. Nine Cavaliers honored at football banquet Ahmad Brooks and Darryl Blackstock shared the Ned McDonald Award as UVa's most outstanding defensive player, while Elton Brown won the Ben Wilson Award as UVa's top offensive player at the team football banquet Monday. Other award winners were Isaiah Ekejuiba (special teams), D'Brickashaw Ferguson (most improved), Andrew Hoffman (interior lineman), Heath Miller (ability, sportsmanship and character), Alvin Pearman (self-sacrifice and enthusiasm) and Tom Santi (first-year player). Women's basketball steals one from Monarchs Virginia used to have one of the top women's basketball programs in the country. In recent years, however, the Cavs have had trouble beating teams from within the state. They have lost to Virginia Tech, Old Dominion, Richmond and Liberty over the past few seasons. So re-establishing themselves as the state's top program would be a good step for the Wahoos. So far, so good. Virginia beat Liberty on Nov. 30, then defeated Old Dominion last Friday with an outstanding defensive effort. The Cavs forced 30 turnovers and scored 35 points off of those ODU mistakes en route to a 72-64 victory at University Hall. Jocelyn Logan-Friend led the 'Hoos with 17 points, a career high. Now 2-0 against in-state opponents, UVa will face Virginia Tech on Jan. 28 (home) and Feb. 13 (away). For more information on UVa women's basketball, please see the link below.

Al Groh the featured guest on CavTalk
Virginia football coach Al Groh was among the guests this week on CavTalk, the weekly radio call-in show hosted by Greg Waters and Mike Andrews. Groh discussed his team's preparations for the MPC Computers Bowl, his thoughts on Fresno State and the speculation concerning his coaching staff, among other subjects. The archive of Tuesday's show is available to Edge subscribers at the link above. Other guests were Mac McDonald, the "Voice of the Cavaliers," and his counterpart at Fresno State, Bill Woodward. Sabre Edge articles and columns from the past week
Unless you're a big fan of Western Athletic Conference football, you probably don't know much about Virginia's opponent in the MPC Computers Bowl, which is now 10 days away. But never fear. TheSabre.com is here to give you a scouting report of Fresno State and tell you everything you need to know about the Bulldogs.
"The greater your knowledge of the game, the greater your enjoyment of it." That quote by George Welsh was the inspiration behind TheSabre.com's newest feature, "Ask the Experts." The idea is for coaches and players to answer questions about their sport, teaching what amounts to an ongoing course in Advanced Football or Advanced Basketball. Welsh, appropriately, handled the first set of questions from TheSabre.com's John Galinsky.
With Virginia's regular season in the books at 8-3, I thought it would be a good time to go back and review the preseason Absolutes and Desirables that I submitted in August. At the beginning of the season, I thought an ACC championship was a realistic goal. But there were certain things that the Cavaliers absolutely needed to do to achieve it (such as improve the rushing offense and defense), and other things that were desirable in order to have a successful season (like fixing the punting problems). How did the Wahoos fare in those categories? Let's look.
From the New York Jets to the Jacksonville Jaguars, through 10 NFL seasons and seven surgeries, Jeff Lageman realized it was time for a career change. Well, not totally. Taking his game out of the trenches and into the broadcast booth, this Cavalier alumnus is no longer taking names - he is giving them, as the color analyst for the Jacksonville Jaguars radio network. Read about Lageman's injury-riddled NFL career, his cerebral approach to the game, his relationship with paralyzed teammate Dennis Byrd and his current job in this "Where Are They Now?" feature.
