Many coaches in the College Football Hall of Fame won more games than George Welsh. Many coached more years and won more championships. But not many coaches accomplished what Welsh did in his 28-year career.

After all, a lot of coaches can boast that they won a national championship. Not many can say they turned around not one, but two dreadful programs. In some ways, that's a more remarkable achievement, the fact that Welsh churned out winning teams at Navy (1973-81) and Virginia (1982-2000) even after many people told him it couldn't be done.

Welsh was inducted into the Hall of Fame on Tuesday at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. He will be enshrined at the Hall in South Bend in August of 2005.

Years from now, fans may wander into the Hall and look at Welsh's plaque and compare his record to that of Bear Bryant, John Heisman and Bobby Bowden. They may wonder what he's doing there. But those of us who are familiar with his career, who realize the magnitude of the rebuilding projects he successfully completed, we know there's no doubt he belongs in the company of those coaching greats.

I could go on and on about Coach Welsh, but his own words about his career and the Hall of Fame are far more interesting. My interview with Coach Welsh in April, when he was named to the Hall of Fame class, was previously just available to Edge subscribers. Now anyone can read it, as long as you promise to check out the rest of this SabreMail, which has all of the latest UVa athletics news and great gift ideas from the SabreShop.

    This Week In Recruiting
    By Chris Horne

    Football recruiting...

UVa hosted Victor "Macho" Harris last weekend and the visit went well. According to Highland Springs coach Scott Burton, the star cornerback/tailback prospect was really impressed with the staff and the University. This experience at least gets UVa seriously in the mix, but it may not be enough to land the 5-star recruit.

    Toney Baker
This weekend, UVa will host LB Darryl Gresham and hopes to host Ragsdale RB Toney Baker. After committing to UVa this summer, Gresham has since decided to take other visits and now calls himself a "soft commit." UVa is hoping to impress him once again and solidify that commitment. It looks unlikely to happen, but they will give it their best shot.

N.C. State appears to have a lot of momentum in the Toney Baker race, though Al Groh visited Baker at his home Wednesday. Groh also hopes to get Baker down for a visit this weekend. Problem is, Baker is supposed to go to the Shrine Bowl this weekend, so there may not be enough time. It would be somewhat of a blow to UVa if he can't make the trip.

Lamont Robinson continues making his official visits this weekend with a trip to Oklahoma. The 6-2, 225-pound LB remains committed to UVa but will make one more visit to another school after Oklahoma. He has already visited Georgia and Ohio State. Iowa is the leading candidate for the fourth visit and UVa will get the fifth.

Hampton WR Todd Nolen could decide anytime. Many feel that UVa remains the team to beat, but the longer he waits the more nervous Virginia's coaches must get. UVa assistant Mike London has done a tremendous job here and appears to have developed a very close relationship with the talented 6-3, 175-pound wideout.

Subject: What the heck...let's go to Boise
Posted by: 111Balz on Mon Dec 6 2004 8:25:48 AM
Message: I know, I know, we deserved better, it's expensive, it will be cold, and Craig/John screwed up. Yep, yep, yep...and let's not forget that last one and hope THEY don't forget it either.

But what the hell, let's go to Boise. I mean, bowl games don't always have to be about warm sun. When will you ever get a chance to see UVA play in the snow on a blue field near some of the most beuatiful country in the land.

And is anybody really ready for the season to be over? Are you really ready to wait 9 months for another chnace to sit in the stands, cheer, sing and sway arm in arm to the Hoos?

I just booked a room at a Doubletree (not the team HQ but a Doubletree just the same) for $59 per nite. The air fare is going to be a little high, but you can get there for under $500 if you shop around and are flexible about when and from where you travel.

Fly into Salt Lake and see that beautiful city at Christmas time. Take a detour to Sun Valley or maybe even Jackson Hole. Use thius as an opportunity to see parts of the country you've always wanted to see...and at a time of year when maybe it is MOST amazing.

I know its just not possible for many of us. But for those of you who COULD, but have been leaning away from doing so for all the reasons above.....what the hell...let's go and support the team and party in Boise

    Five Wahoos make All-ACC team

    Elton Brown
A lot of fans have been dwelling on the weaknesses of the Virginia football team. That's understandable given the way the regular season ended. But it's easy to forget that this team has some significant strengths.

This week's All-ACC voting reminded us of that as five Cavaliers made the first team, the largest representation of any of the conference's 11 programs. (Yes, even more than the Hokies, who had four.) Elton Brown, Heath Miller and Alvin Pearman were the three leading vote-getters overall, while Ahmad Brooks and D'Brickashaw Ferguson also earned first-team honors. In addition, Brown won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy as the ACC's top blocker for the second straight year.

Darryl Blackstock and Zac Yarbrough made the All-ACC second team, and Andrew Hoffman gained honorable mention recognition. Other Cavaliers, like Wali Lundy and Connor Hughes, also may have warranted All-ACC consideration, but Coach Al Groh only nominated the eight players he felt were most deserving.

    Big Money wins Mackey Award

    Heath Miller
Heath Miller probably should have won the John Mackey Award last season. He caught 70 passes as a junior and was one of three finalists for the honor, which goes to the nation's top tight end, but he was beaten out by Miami's Kellen Winslow based largely on reputation.

But if last season showed anything, it's that reputation matters. Miller came into this season as the tight end with the best reputation and that paid off Thursday when he won the Mackey Award despite a large statistical dropoff. He has 36 receptions this season, about half as many as last year, for 475 yards and five touchdowns. Of course, that falloff is due in large part to Virginia's diminished passing game. Miller is still the same player, if not better, and he played a big role in UVa's powerful running game by improving his blocking this season.

Miller edged out finalists Alex Smith (Stanford) and Marcedes Lewis (UCLA) in the closest race in Mackey Award history.

"The entire Virginia football family is thrilled for Heath, and we congratulate him," head coach Al Groh said. "He truly is 'the best' in every respect. He is a sensational playmaker yet selfless in every way. We are all proud to go to the field with him every day."

Men's basketball completes exhausting early-season stretch

    Devin Smith

The Virginia men's basketball team packed its first eight games of the season into 19 days. Given that schedule and a handful of pretty good opponents, a 7-1 record isn't shabby going into a 15-day break for final exams.

The Cavaliers played the last four games in four arenas in eight days. They beat Northwestern, Auburn and Furman and fell to Iowa State in that stretch, with the lone defeat coming by two points at Hilton Coliseum, where the Cyclones have won 21 of their past 22 games.

There were some outstanding performances by UVa players in those games. Freshman point guard Sean Singletary scored 25 points against Auburn, Gary Forbes had 21 against Furman and Elton Brown recorded three more double-doubles, giving him six for the season. But the most amazing effort came courtesy of Devin Smith, who scored 40 points against Iowa State and almost single-handedly kept the Cavs in the game.

    Teamer plays well in homecoming

Brandi Teamer grew up near Chicago, left to play basketball at UVa and made a triumphant return to her home state last weekend.

The senior center scored a season-high 24 points as the Cavaliers beat host Northwestern, 76-55, in the Mildred & Roger L. White Invitational in Evanston, Ill., on Sunday. That allowed Virginia to salvage the trip after falling 67-64 to No. 24 Houston the previous night. Teamer made the all-tournament team, as did teammate Jocelyn Logan-Friend.

The Cavaliers (5-3) return home to play Old Dominion on Friday night before taking an 11-day break for exams.

Men's soccer falls to Duke in NCAA quarterfinal

The UVa men's soccer team beat Duke once in the regular season, then again in the ACC tournament. The Cavaliers coudn't do it a third time, however, and as a result saw their season come to an end in the NCAA tournament quarterfinals.

The Blue Devils scored two early goals and eventually claimed a 3-0 victory Saturday at Klockner Stadium, avenging a 3-2 overtime loss in the regular season and a 3-1 defeat in the ACC quarterfinals.

It was a disappointing conclusion to a successful season for Virginia, which went 18-5 and captured the ACC championship.

  • Will 2005 Recruits Make an Impact at UVa?, Chris Horne

Image: Laurynas MikalauskasOn November 18, the University of Virginia announced the signing of three basketball recruits for the 2005 recruiting class: Laurynas Mikalauskas, Sam Warren and Mamadi Diane. Judging by the rankings, this was not a spectacular class. None of these prospects are currently rated in Rivals.com's Top 150 prospects or Scout.com's Top 100. But it was a solid class. Let's take a look at these players and how they should fit into the program next season.

  • Cavs Find Their Legs, Finish Off Furman, John Galinsky

Image: Gary ForbesPlaying their fourth game in their fourth arena in eight days, fatigue may have been a factor for Virginia in its game against Furman tonight. The Cavaliers seemed a step slow most of the evening, allowing the pesky Paladins of the Southern Conference to stay close. But just when you'd expect them to be most exhausted, the Wahoos were at their most energetic. No. 19 Virginia pulled away in the final 10 minutes, turning a tenuous two-point lead into a 15-point bulge before finishing with a 79-67 victory at University Hall.

  • The 12 Biggest Issues for 2005, Nick Sauer

Image: Wali LundyI'll start off by saying that I'm just as disappointed with the outcome of this football season as most people on the message boards have been. But hey, it's time to move on and look ahead to next year, even before the current Cavs finish up 2004 by bowling in Boise. The 2005 team also will have plenty of potential, so I'll give you my 12 keys for the spring practices and for next season, including how the coaches split carries between tailbacks Wali Lundy and Michael Johnson.

  • Smith Scores 40 but Cavs Fall to Cyclones, John Galinsky

Image: Devin SmithDespite a magnificent performance by Devin Smith and an impressive second-half comeback, Virginia suffered its first loss of the season in one of the toughest road venues in America. Curtis Stinson's 3-pointer with 18.6 seconds left ended up giving Iowa State an 81-79 victory as the 19th-ranked Cavaliers missed three chances to tie in the final seconds. Playing before a boisterous crowd of 12,224 at Hilton Coliseum, where the Cyclones have now gone 21-1 in the past two seasons, the Cavs (6-1) nearly found a way to win.

  • Cavs Win This One With Offense, John Galinsky

Image: Sean SingletaryRICHMOND - Virginia's run-and-gun, sweet-shooting, helter-skelter game against Auburn on Friday night was the polar opposite of its walk-it-up, stuck-in-quicksand snoozer at Northwestern two days before in every respect but one: The result. Led by Sean Singletary and Devin Smith, the 24th-ranked and still-unbeaten Cavaliers won another close one, outgunning the Tigers 89-87 in an exciting offensive spectacle at the Siegal Center. That came on the heels of Wednesday's 48-44 victory over the Wildcats that was played at an entirely different tempo.
