IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THESABRE.COM

Effective today, we're implementing several changes at TheSabre.com.

First, we've installed new programming that will make it easier for you to consolidate and manage your accounts. (More on that below.) Also, the price of a Sabre Edge subscription will now be $5.99/month with monthly auto-billing. That's an increase over the previous rate, but we hope you agree that it is a fair price to pay for the content and community of the Edge. We've been upgrading the site steadily over the years and have particularly focused on improving the quantity and quality of Edge content in the past six months. Our mission is to provide the best analysis, opinion, news and feature articles about UVa athletics along with in-depth recruiting coverage and a variety of audio/video content. We have ambitious plans to continue improving Sabre Edge on an ongoing basis. And don't forget that subscribers still will enjoy a 10% discount at TheSabreShop.

If you are already a Sabre Edge subscriber, your account is good through your current expiration date with the price already charged. The new auto-billing price of $5.99 per month will not go into effect for you until your current subscription's expiration date. Please review the options listed below for information on how you can update your credit card information so that you do not miss a day of Sabre Edge.

As always, your feedback is important to us. If you don't feel the Edge is a bargain at the new price (still less than a movie ticket), let us know. Also, in the near future, we will be posting a content survey on the site. We want to know what you like about the site, what you don't like and what you think we can do to improve. Your feedback drives all of our decisions, so please don't hesitate to offer criticism, advice and suggestions.

IMPORTANT!! ACCOUNT CONSOLIDATION INFORMATION

Part of our new programming involved consolidating the multiple accounts you may have had with TheSabre.com and giving you one simple area to manage things. You will no longer have separate accounts for Sabre Edge, SabreMail and the Message Boards. Instead, you will have one customer profile area called ACCOUNT INFO, where you can make changes to your email, password or other information on file with us. Your account info area will also allow you to turn on or off SabreMail mailings and Sabre Edge email notifications (if you are a subscriber).

Due to the complexity of this account consolidation project, it may be necessary for you to update your account with us. Some users on the site had different email addresses for various accounts, so it was impossible to match everything up for everyone. Please review the choices below and follow the instructions for whatever applies to you. If you need assistance with the process, you may contact us at [email protected].

(1) You have a Sabre Edge subscriber account and a Message Board account with TheSabre.com: Go to TheSabre.com and choose the LOGIN link at the top of the page. Use the email address and password you normally used to access your Sabre Edge subscription. When the page resets, you should see a link at the top of the page for ACCOUNT INFO. Choose that link and then update your account page if necessary.

Note: Once your subscription reaches its expiration date, we will attempt to automatically renew your account monthly at $5.99 per month until you tell us otherwise.

If you wish to continue auto-billing, please ensure that your credit card information is up to date. If you do not have a credit card number on file, you may enter your information on your account info page and click UPDATE CHANGES.

If you do not want your account to be renewed automatically, you may change this option from your account info page.

(2) You have a Sabre Edge account but never established a message board username: A username is what identifies you on the site and the message boards. It is normally NOT your email address or real name. We would like for you to establish a message board username so that you will get full functionality from the new programming. Also, if you change your email address and forget to update this in our records, your username will allow you to access your ACCOUNT INFO page instead of you having to remember your old email address.

So, if you do not have a username established for your Sabre Edge account, please contact us at [email protected] and provide a couple of choices for your new username. We will manually enter this information into the database for you. Please be sure to include your first and last name and email address so that we can easily pull up your account.

(3) You signed up for SabreMail, but you never established a message board username or Sabre Edge account using that email address: You will not continue to receive SabreMail under this circumstance. To receive SabreMail in the future, you will need to sign up again by going through our Message Board registration area. You may sign up for an account by clicking the CREATE ACCOUNT link at the top of the home page, or by CLICKING HERE. While signing up for a username (message board account), you will have the option of selecting a checkbox to RECEIVE SABREMAIL.

(4) You have a message board account, but you also want to sign up for Sabre Edge. Be sure to LOGIN first then SIGN UP HERE. The above options should cover most issues with your account. If you experience problems, or just need a little assistance with the conversion, please do not hesitate to email us at [email protected]. Please note that for the first week of this process, we may experience a heavy volume of customer service emails. We will do our best to respond to you as quickly as we can.

Also, if you experience any glitches with the new programming or access to the site, please let us know. We will work very quickly to resolve any issues that arise.

We hope that you enjoy the new programming and features. For some, it may be a matter of connecting some dots and making a few adjustments. But this should make things a lot easier in terms of managing your multiple accounts with TheSabre.com.

Thanks for your patience and cooperation while we attempt to improve this site.

   News, Notes and Fan Discussion

After week off, a changed football landscape

Al Groh's team is in the thick of the ACC title hunt.

Without playing a game, the Virginia football team's outlook for the final month of the regular season changed quite a bit last weekend.

Thanks to Miami's loss to North Carolina and Florida State's defeat at Maryland, the Cavaliers suddenly found themselves on top of the ACC standings. Tied at 3-1 with Miami and Virginia Tech, Virginia has a chance to win the conference title outright by sweeping its final four games.

Of course, that won't be easy. The 'Hoos face Maryland and Miami at home, then Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech on the road. All of those opponents are formidable. But as last weekend showed, every team is beatable, and it looks like nothing will go as expected. At this point, all you can ask is to have your destiny in your own hands. And now, because of some surprising results, Virginia controls its own fate. Should be an exciting November.

Basketball teams to sign autographs, play exhibition

Both Virginia basketball teams will be signing autographs before the Maryland football game at the Aquatics and Fitness Center. Fans can meet members of the men's and women's teams from 2-3 p.m. as part of Fan Fest, which runs from 12:30-3. Other activities include a live band, gyrosphere, interactive inflatable games, silent auction, face tattoos, photo opportunities and a try-on station.

The night before, fans can also watch the Cavalier men play an exhibition game at University Hall. They will take on Lehman College tonight at 7:30.

Men's soccer finishes regular season vs. Maryland

Coming off a disappointing loss to Virginia Tech, the UVa men's soccer team can still conclude a successful regular season by beating Maryland tonight at Klockner Stadium.

The No. 8 Cavaliers (14-3, 4-2 ACC) can wrap up no worse than the second seed in the ACC tournament by defeating the No. 12 Terrapins (12-4-1, 3-2-1 ACC). Virginia has won all 11 of its home games this season.

The Wahoos were sidetracked last Saturday when they dropped a 2-1 decision in Blacksburg. That ended their nine-game winning streak overall and their 27-match winning streak against the Hokies.

Women's soccer pounds Hokies in ACC tourney

The Cavalier women had no such problem against Virginia Tech. In the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament, the second-seeded Cavs scored four goals in each half and buried the Hokies, 8-0, Wednesday in Cary, N.C.

Junior forward Kristen Weiss delivered two goals and three assists for Virginia (15-2-1), which will play Clemson in tonight's semifinals. Lindsay Gusick and Kelly Hammond also scored two goals apiece.

Gusick, a senior forward, and junior midfielder Sarah Huffman were selected to the All-ACC first team. Huffman was named ACC defender of the year.

Sabre Edge articles and columns from the past week

  • Maryland Preview: Absolutes & Desirables, Greg Waters

Image: Virginia's DefenseFor each game, we list five things Virginia needs to do (the absolutes) and five things the Cavaliers would like to do (the desirables). Here are the absolutes and desirables for Saturday's game against Maryland. There are several keys for the Virginia defense, which needs to put pressure on Joel Statham, defend the underneath routes and stop the Terrapins on third down. UVa's offense must run effectively and exploit the Maryland blitz.

  • 5 Members in ACC Hunt Club, Greg Waters

Image: Coach Al GrohThe word parity is so often overused in sports today, but it is a reality of the new ACC. Entering last weekend's action, all Miami and Florida State had to do was win their remaining games and both teams would have likely been headed for top-five finishes and BCS Bowls. Then Saturday changed everything. With Miami's loss to North Carolina and FSU's defeat in College Park, the dynamic in the ACC title race became a lot more complicated. All of a sudden, Virginia, Virginia Tech and - believe it or not - North Carolina are all solidly "in the hunt," as UVa coach Al Groh likes to say.

  • Elton Brown: Last Chance to Achieve Goals, J.D. Moss

Image: Elton BrownLast year was supposed to be the year Elton Brown broke out. Travis Watson was gone, leaving Brown as the sole inside scoring threat. Brown readied himself for the challenge and dedicated himself over the summer, trimming nearly 30 pounds off a once-plump 6-9 frame by cutting junk food from his diet and running endlessly. It certainly helped, as the Newport News native averaged a career-high 14.8 points and 6.3 rebounds. Despite those numbers, his game still had holes, mainly with his defense and consistency. He knows that to achieve his goals - leading Virginia to the NCAAs, making an All-ACC team, improving his NBA stock - he must keep improving. He also knows this is his last chance.

  • Groh: November Will Tell Story of Season, Greg Waters

Image: Marques HagansVirginia coach Al Groh has said all season long that the goal for his team was to be in the hunt on November 1st. Having accomplished that goal, Groh says the next goal is to be in the hunt on November 7th. Groh said he knew from the start that "what we did down the home stretch was going to write the story of the season." There is more on the November stretch run in this article, plus news on new starters listed at fullback and cornerback. Also, updated injury information on Marques Hagans, Jason Snelling and Chris Long.

  • Al Groh Press Conference - 11/01/04, TheSabre.com

Coach Al Groh held a press conference Monday, November 1st to discuss the upcoming ACC match-up with Maryland, as well as Virginia being in the hunt for the ACC championship. Greg Waters was able to catch up with Marques Hagans, Jermaine Hardy and Alvin Pearman to get their thoughts on the upcoming game.

  • The Recruitment of Jeffrey Fitzgerald, Chris Horne

Image: Jeffrey FitzgeraldJeffrey Fitzgerald's first encounter with a member of the University of Virginia football staff came in 2002. It was right before the start of the third game of his sophomore season. And it was just a quick handshake and hello from assistant coach Mike Groh, who made the short drive to Richmond to watch several of the Hermitage High School players in action. "He wasn't allowed to carry on a conversation, so he just introduced himself," said Fitzgerald, a 6-4, 250-pound defensive end who ended up committing to the Cavaliers two years later.
