Trick or treat? Virginia fans may be wondering that about their football team this season. It's hard to tell if we're being tricked or treated. Through seven games, the Cavaliers have won six times. But they haven't beaten a team with a winning record, and they were whacked by Florida State in their only contest against top-notch competition. So it remains to be seen if the 'Hoos are legitimate ACC championship contenders - or if they're just wearing a costume. The post-Halloween portion of the schedule will answer those questions better than the past two months did. With games against Maryland, Miami, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech - the latter three have winning records - the Cavs still have something to prove. Are they as good as they have looked in beating six teams by a combined score of 249-74? Or as bad as they looked in a 36-3 loss to the Seminoles? Who knows? None of UVa's games have been decided by fewer than 20 points. If nothing else, the November stretch run figures to offer plenty of drama and excitement. Unlike the first seven games, the final four all could be close. Then we'll see how the Wahoos fare under pressure. If they stumble down the stretch, the early part of the season will seem like some cruel trick, raising our hopes only to dash them. But if they rise to the occasion and finish with a flourish, this season may yet provide a nice treat.

This Week In Recruiting By Chris Horne Football recruiting... Eleanor Roosevelt (Greenbelt, MD) WR Derrick Williams will make an official visit to Penn State this weekend. Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas are in good shape for the final three spots, with Florida State and Virginia also in contention. For now, it seems UVa is on the outside looking in for the nation's top prospect.
On the junior recruiting front, UVa has offered at least two prospects in the state of Virginia. Westfield (Fairfax, VA) tailback Evan Royster and Highland Springs (VA) middle linebacker Jarrell Miller each have received official offers from UVa. Royster is a 6-0, 190-pound back, while Miller is 6-3, 235 pounds. Both are considered among the state's top prospects in the 2006 class. Next weekend, when UVa plays Maryland at Scott Stadium, the Cavs will host 5-10, 195-pound North Hall (Gainesville, GA) tailback T.J. PItts on an official visit. Top lineman Eugene Monroe is among the commitments expected to be on campus as well.

News, Notes and Fan Discussion | ||||||||
Post of the Week This post brought up fond memories for many long-time Sabre junkies and elicited dozens of responses.
Subject: Are there any real old timers (Pre-Sabre) on this board
My greatest memory was following the whole Curry debacle, and first hearing the reports about his reversal. I can still remember Hoosball saying in one post, the chances of Curry coming to UVA 90%, UNC 10%, and then 30 minutes later coming back and saying, wow, there has been a change, UNC 90%, and UVA 10%! There was also that bonehead from the Tarpit, I can't remember his name, but he came on our board saying, "Face it guys, UNC is just on a higher level compared to your program", only to watch them take a nosedive when Mack left. Anyway, what were your memories when this board first started? Good or bad. To read the entire thread, click on the link below.
Pearman, Cavs run over Duke
Thank goodness for Alvin Pearman. The senior tailback came to the rescue, carrying 38 times for 223 yards as the Wahoos finally pulled away for a 37-16 victory over pesky Duke at Wallace Wade Stadium. In all, Virginia rushed for 348 yards - 346 more than it managed on its previous trip to Durham in 2002. Unlike in previous seasons, the Cavs can turn to a power running game when other things aren't working. Pearman. Wali Lundy (82 yards, two TDs) and Michael Johnson (47 yards) followed their blockers and eventually wore down the Blue Devils. UVa led by just a touchdown before scoring two insurance TDs in the fourth quarter. For a story on the game, please check out the link below.
After week of rest, stretch run awaits Virginia's second and final bye week of the season comes at a good time. The Cavaliers could use the extra time to rest, recuperate and get ready for a November stretch run that will make or break their season. Currently 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the ACC, the 'Hoos close the regular season with home games against Maryland and Miami, followed by road games at Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech. All four teams have formidable defenses and figure to present significant challenges for the Cavs. For more info on Maryland game, please check out the link below.
Basketball team to host pancake breakfast for fans Hot cakes and hoops go together? 'Hoo knew? This Saturday the Virginia men's basketball team will host a "Hot Cakes and Hoops with the 'Hoos" event at University Hall. The players will serve pancakes to the first 500 fans starting at 10 a.m., followed by a "Basketball 101" session with Coach Pete Gillen and his staff. Fans are then welcome to watch the Cavs practice from 11:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Best part of the whole event: It's free. For more information about the pancake breakfast, please see the link below.
Nine straight wins for men's soccer It's looking more and more like a special season for the Virginia men's soccer team, which recorded two more victories over the past week to extend its winning streak to nine. Last Saturday's 3-2 overtime triumph over Duke was the most remarkable win of the season for the Cavaliers, who trailed 2-0 with less than four minutes left in regulation. Goals by John Hartman and Hunter Freeman - the second on a penalty kick - sent the game into OT, and Mike Littlefield's header in the seventh minute won it for the Wahoos at Klockner Stadium. The Cavs followed that with a 4-1 victory over No. 24 Old Dominion on Wednesday, running their home record to 11-0. Matt Oliver scored twice and Freeman delivered three assists, giving him 19 this season (most in the nation and one shy of the school record). No. 7 Virginia (14-2, 4-1 ACC) can clinch the top seed in the ACC tournament by winning its final two games - at Virginia Tech on Saturday, and at home vs. Maryland next Friday. Twelve shutouts for women's soccer The Virginia women's soccer team wrapped up an excellent regular season with two more shutouts. The fourth-ranked Cavaliers beat Clemson 2-0 last Sunday, then routed N.C. State 3-0 on Wednesday to finish regular-season play with a 14-2-1 record. At 6-2-1 in ACC play, they will be the second seed in the conference tournament starting next Wednesday in Cary, N.C. UVa's defense, led by goalie Christina de Vries, has been extraordinary all season. The 'Hoos have posted 12 shutouts in 17 games and have allowed just eight goals. Sabre Edge articles and columns from the past week
For every individual, there are secrets. Things about them that neither love, nor torture, nor the combination of both - marriage - can cause them to reveal. These secrets hide deep in the recesses of their consciousness, an anchor on their everyday existence, weighing on them for the duration of their lives. We all have them, and we are all prisoners to them. Prisoners, unless we somehow find the courage to break free of their hold, and tell the world our unknown story. Today, I am here to do just that: I don't think I hate Virginia Tech anymore.
The stretch run is defined as that time of year after November 1st. In three years under Al Groh, Virginia has gone 8-6 down the stretch, including 6-2 in Scott Stadium and 2-0 in bowl games. On the road, however, the 'Hoos are 0-4. We thought during the off week it would be a good time to take a look at Virginia's remaining stretch-run opponents. What should we expect from Maryland, Miami, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech? And how do the Cavaliers match up?
It remains to be seen whether this ends up being the best football season in Virginia history. That possibility exists, though we can't even begin to answer that question until the end of next month. What's become more evident is that this is shaping up as the most boring season in the annals of Cavalier football. None of the first seven games has been decided by fewer than 20 points, the first time that's happened in the program's 115 seasons. C'mon, people, a little drama, please!
Have you ever had one of those days when you weren't completely prepared for a test, but felt fortunate that the test didn't have too many tough questions? The Cavaliers probably felt that way Saturday. Though they didn't have all the right answers, they came up with enough to pass the easy test provided by Duke. In fact, they passed it without much of a passing game from injured quarterback Marques Hagans and without getting high marks from the defense.
DURHAM, N.C. -- A heavy dose of Alvin Pearman was not originally on Virginia's agenda, but it became apparent very early that the Cavaliers would have to adjust their offensive strategy. Thrust into a workhorse role, Pearman turned in one of the best performances by a tailback in UVa history, rushing 38 times for 223 yards during Saturday's 37-16 triumph over Duke. We'll look at how he did it and why it was necessary.
DURHAM, N.C. - Just as well this game wasn't on TV. If you didn't watch it and simply looked at the final score and stat sheet, you'd think Virginia did just fine. A 21-point win. Six sacks. Two-hundred twenty-three rushing yards - yes, 223! - for Alvin Pearman. It even looked like Marques Hagans had a decent day. But beyond the numbers, for those of us watching closely at Wallace Wade Stadium, there was very little about UVa's 37-16 rout-but-not-a-rout of Duke that was encouraging.
