This Week In Recruiting By Chris Horne Football recruiting...
With Sewell's commitment, Virginia now has a drop-back passer to go along with Gretna QB Vic Hall, who is considered a dual-threat signal caller. UVa's recruitment of quarterbacks is likely finished for the 2005 class. Phoebus tailback Elan Lewis has 3 schools on the top of his list right now.Virginia Tech, UVa and Maryland. Phoebus Head Coach Bill Dee indicated that Lewis may make his first official visit to Virginia Tech for the weekend of September 11th. Nothing has been set. UVa appears on the outside looking in for Red Bank (NJ) defensive tackle Kade Weston. Weston mentioned Florida and Georgia as possible visit destinations and candidly admitted that UVa is "on the border" with him. Basketball recruiting... In other news, UVa men's basketball has offered DeMatha Catholic (MD) shooting guard Mamadi Diane and Don Bosco Prep (NJ) power forward Tyrell Biggs. DeMatha Catholic Head Coach Mike Jones says Diane has six offers, most of which are from ACC schools. Biggs is drawing ACC and Big East interest. Both have the Cavaliers in their respective top 10 lists right now.

News, Notes and Fan Discussion | |||||
Virginia Football picked to finish 3rd in the ACC The annual ACC Football Kickoff began this week in Greensboro, N.C. Media representatives picked the Cavaliers to finish third in the conference this season, behind 2003 ACC winner FSU and 2003 Big East conference winner Miami. The Seminoles gathered 49 of 88 of the top place votes (925 points), while Miami brought in 36 votes (913 points). The Cavaliers received two first place votes and finished with 697 points, which is remarkable considering the loss of All-ACC quarterback Matt Schaub, the addition of Virginia Tech to the ACC, and the rise of the Clemson and Maryland programs. Virginia Tech, who had ripped off four straight wins over the Cavalier prior to last year's 34-21 thrashing in Charlottesville, was picked to finish 6th and finished with 511 points. Clemson and Maryland were picked 4th and 5th, respectively.
Cavaliers to being practice August 11th
The Cavaliers will be starting a new quarterback, but that's about all that will appear 'new' with this offense. While Marques Hagans will be the likely candidate to fill the role as the signal caller, the Cavaliers are living in luxury at every other position on the offensive side of the ball. Cavalier fans will get to see the return of UVa's top fullback and top returning receiver from two seasons ago, Jason Snelling and Michael McGrew. The Hoos also return a host of veterans on the offensive line, including All-American Elton Brown and superstar tight end Heath Miller. Returning at tailback are Wali Lundy and Alvin Pearman, and the Hoos will also welcome back speedster Michael Johnson, Jr. after red-shirting last season. Defensively, the Hoos may have the best corps of linebackers in the country. Returning from last year are Darryl Blackstock, Ahmad Brooks, Kai Parham and Dennis Haley. Also in the mix are red-shirt freshmen Jermaine Dias and Vince Redd, along with steady performers Rich Bedesem, Mark Miller and Jon Thompson. The Cavaliers also return their entire defensive line, consisting of veterans Chris Canty, Andrew Hoffman and Brennan Schmidt. And while the Hoos have to answer some questions about who will win the punting duties, there's no doubt who the place kicker will be. Connor Hughes clearly established himself as one of the nation's top kickers as a sophomore last season, nailing 92 percent of his field goals (23 of 25) and hitting on all 40 of his extra points. 2004 Virginia Football roster VirginiaSports.com has updated, for the most part, the 2004 Virginia Football roster. For Wahoos who are Redskins fans While we understand that not all of our Wahoo fans are Redskins fans, we do know that the majority of Wahoos that frequent this site are. Therefore, we have created a site just for Skins fans. It's called SkinsGridiron.com and it's going to be run by Gary Cope, an excellent sportswriter and longtime Redskins fan. Skins fans may access the site at the link below. And please foward any suggestions or comments you may have about the site to Gary Cope, the site administrator. His contact information is on the CONTACT page of that site. The site is a result of suggestions and feedback we've received from our fans and does not in any way show my allegence to any particular professional team. Most of you know who I root for, so I'll leave it at that :) One last note. If you register to post on the SkinsGridiron.com message boards, please do not register your Wahoo or Sabre username. Sabre Edge articles and columns from the past week
The Cavaliers already have 20 commitments for their 2005 recruiting class. They have landed some of the country's most highly-rated prospects in Eugene Monroe, Mike Brown and Lamont Robinson. They have landed some of the top targets in the state of Virginia in Darryl Gresham, Antonio Appleby and Vic Hall. But with few scholarship spots left to offer, Virginia will try to fill them with some of the highest players on its recruiting board. Who are UVa's top remaining targets? Here's a hint: Victor "Macho" Harris is near the top of the list.
The title says it all, right? Let's go then. 1. Temple and Akron give Virginia more trouble than most are expecting. 2. But not enough to pull the upset. 3. Chris Rix finally lives up to...snicker...the...snicker...hype. O.K., I couldn't even type that with a straight face. 4. But Rix's problems aren't enough to keep Florida State from overcoming Miami and winning its 12th conference title.
Soon after Signing Day 2004, Virginia filled one of its coaching vacancies with Mark D'Onofrio. D'Onofrio, who spent the past three seasons as the Rutgers linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator, energized Cavalier fans' expectations in New Jersey recruiting. And those expectations have been realized thus far, as UVa has gotten commitments from four of the state's top prospects in Eugene Monroe, Mike Brown, Lamont Robinson and Denzel Burrell. With his connections in northern New Jersey and the reputation he developed at Rutgers, the new tight ends/special teams coach figured to be a welcome addition to UVa football recruiting and is proving to be just that in the early part of his tenure.
Al Groh & Co. have landed a bunch of big recruits over the past three years. The frequent late-night visitors to the Waffle House have secured signatures from the likes of Ahmad Brooks, Kai Parham, Michael Johnson, D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Philip Brown and Chris Long. But Groh's biggest recruit as Virginia's head coach, literally and figuratively, may have been former New Orleans Saints assistant strength and conditioning coach Evan Marcus. Whether you're talking to a Cavalier player or coach, one thing is apparent: Marcus rocks. And we're not talking about the Metallica blaring from the McCue Center weight room.
