Let's see. Football season is still 43 days away. Recruiting has slowed down a bit. The summer is getting lazy, and so am I. Yeah, now's a good time to sneak off for a little while.

I'll be heading to Texas for a one-week vacation to visit family and friends. That means no lunchtime polls on the football message board and no SabreMail next week. But it doesn't mean there won't be any action on TheSabre.com. For Edge subscribers, Chris Horne will be providing daily recruiting updates as well as a feature on new UVa assistant coach Mark D'Onofrio, who is reeling in commitments from New Jersey. Chris will also provide a breakdown of Virginia's top 20 remaining targets for the 2005 class. For those who aren't recruiting junkies, Greg Waters and Michael Gillespie will be writing stories about the current Cavaliers as they prepare for a banner 2004 season. (If you haven't already, please welcome Greg to TheSabre.com's staff. He will be writing extensively about the 'Hoos throughout the next year and is a tremendous addition to the site.)

When I get back, we'll go full throttle into football with features, columns and analysis pieces during preseason camp and beyond. Much of it will be stuff you can't find in your daily newspaper, so if you're not already an Edge subscriber, please consider signing up. It's a bargain at $34.95 a year and it will help you stay well-informed and up to date on all the news about the 'Hoos.

For the next week, though, I'll be in Austin, eating Tex-Mex food, sipping margaritas and basking in a sea of burnt orange. I'll still be monitoring the message boards, however, so don't get out of control. Remember: The Eyes of Texas are upon you. :)

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Football recruiting...

Todd Nolen
We added video for three top prospects this week - Gretna QB and UVa commit Vic Hall, Phoebus star TB Elan Lewis, and Hampton WR Todd Nolen - for Sabre Edge subscribers.

Hall, who boasts a strong arm and very fast feet, displays his versatility and dual-threat capabilities in his video clips; Lewis, with his natural running ability, vision, quickness and speed, shows why he was one of the most productive backs in the state over his high school career; and Nolen shows his big-play ability despite his relative inexperience at the wide receiver position. Look for more videos over the next several weeks, including clips of current UVa commitments.

In other news, Virginia made the initial cut for the nation's top player - Eleanor Roosevelt (MD) wide receiver/athlete Derrick Williams. Williams hopes to narrow his list once again very soon, possibly as early as the middle of next month. UVa did not make the initial cut for LB Derek Nicholson. Nicholson, who set a list of 10 favorite schools, did not eliminate the Cavaliers just yet but says they are currently out of his top 10.

UVa outside linebacker commit Denzel Burrell talked about his summer camp experience in Charlottesville earlier this year. The 6-4, 208-pound Burrell learned a lot from his time at UVa's camp, where he played linebacker for the first time in his career. UVa recruited Burrell, an outstanding defensive end in high school, to play outside linebacker. Burrell has been working hard on his speed this off-season and recently clocked in at 4.7 flat in the 40-yard dash.

    Subject: Okay addendum
Posted by: rmcwahoo on Mon Jul 19 2004 4:24:19 PM
Message: Yes I will be aware of the day's significance and take some time to think about it. Politically I am an ardent supporter of taking the fight to the terrorists, so basically I think about 9/11 everyday, in terms of how to best combat the threat that was ultimately revealed that morning. So any idea that I have forgotten is mistaken.

I also, like many others, am not a person who is big on anniversaries for emotional remembrances. I haven't forgotten Al Queda, as I noted, I read and think about them everyday. Yes Sept 11th is a day for remembrance, and anniversaries do provide emotional catalysts for many and with that in mind I don't think any American will not at some point during the day remember what occurred in New York City, Pennsylvania, and Arlington.

That said we as Americans have to be able to move on at the same time as we remain able to look back. The pageantry of college football is something that defines our nation, and it brings happiness to millions. The ability of Americans to gather with family and friends on an autumn day and celebrate the sport of football and all it means is exactly what the terrorists want to take away. You defeat the terrorists by being with your loved ones and enjoying each others company just the same as you defeat them by never forgetting what they have done. If anything we should enjoy this Sept 11 more than ever before, for by tailgating and going to a game with 60,000 other folks we show the terrorists not only did they not win, but they can't win. That we won't just fall down, and that we will continue to live.

In closing I AM looking forward to Sept 11th. And I am cognizant everyday of the war on terror and what happened that day, just as I am cognizant of what occurred on the USS Cole, and in Kenya, and in Saudi Arabia, and at the WTC in 1993. But life goes on, and by celebrating the joys of life we defeat all those who would rather we focus on death.

Lunchtime polls on football message board

TheSabre.com has been conducting a poll from roughly noon to 2 p.m. every weekday the past few weeks on the football message board. Among the questions (with the most common answer in parentheses):

  • Assuming Michael McGrew is the No. 1 wide receiver on the team, who do you think will end up as No. 2? (Fontel Mines)
  • Which Cavalier is most likely to be a first-team All-American? (Heath Miller)
  • If a genie could guarantee you one win this year, which game would you pick? (Florida State)
  • Who should be second-string QB behind Marques Hagans? (Christian Olsen)
  • Which freshman will make the biggest impact this season? (Philip Brown)
  • Who is the greatest Cavalier player ever? (Anthony Poindexter)
  • Who is the best Wahoo walk-on ever? (Patrick Kerney)
  • Besides football and basketball, what is your favorite sport at UVa? (Lacrosse)
  • In your honest opinion, what do you think UVa's record will be this season? (9-3)

Zimmerman on a tear for Team USA

Image: Ryan ZimmermanRyan Zimmerman led Virginia's baseball team with a .361 average last season. Compared to how he's hitting now, that almost seems like a slump.

The rising junior third baseman from Virginia Beach has emerged as the top hitter for Team USA, a collection of college players who just completed their freshman or sophomore seasons. In 16 games against international competition, Zimmerman has batted a team-high .509 with 27 hits and 25 RBI. In a recent stretch of seven games, he rapped out 21 hits in 32 at-bats.

Zimmerman leads Team USA into the World University Games in Taiwan this weekend. The Americans face Mexico tonight in their opening game. Zimmerman leads the U.S. in average, hits, RBI, home runs (3), doubles (8) and slugging percentage (.868).

Doyle Smith memorial service: Aug. 1

Image: Doyle SmithA memorial service for Doyle Smith is scheduled for August 1 at UVa's Alumni Hall. Smith, a member of the UVa athletics media relations office staff for 31 years before his retirement in 1999 and a legend in the lacrosse community, died on June 1 at the age of 60.

The service is scheduled for 2-5 p.m. Individuals are requested to send in or bring written anecdotes about Doyle. Anecdotes can be e-mailed to Doyle's sisters, Laurie Filstrup ([email protected]) and Debby Cunningham ([email protected]) or mailed to Rich Murray, Athletics Media Relations Office, P.O. Box 400853, Charlottesville, VA, 22904-4853. There will be an opportunity for individuals to tell stories or say a few words about Doyle during the service.

  • 2005 Recruiting War Room #4: Defense, Chris Horne

Image: Victor HarrisSince the last Defense War Room, UVa has added two more top targets in inside linebacker Darryl Gresham and cornerback Mike Brown. Gresham's commitment gives UVa an excellent set of linebackers that includes Lamont Robinson, Antonio Appleby and Denzel Burrell. Still, with as few as four spots remaining in the 2005 class, UVa remains in the picture for up to 20 defensive prospects, including linebacker Brian Cushing and athlete Macho Harris.

  • JPJ Arena Update: Right on Schedule, John Galinsky

First of all, forget about those rumors that John Paul Jones Arena will be ready for the 2005-06 basketball season - a year ahead of schedule. "There's no chance," said Bob Moje, the principal architect working on the mammoth project.

The good news, Moje said, is that "the project is right on schedule in terms of construction, which is actually pretty amazing." Frequent rain hasn't delayed work or affected the timetable, so the Cavaliers should be able to move into their state-of-the-art facility by the summer of 2006.

  • 'Hoo, Me? My Experience as a Wahoo Walk-on, Nick Sauer

Image: Nick Sauer"Hey, who the heck are you? Get out of our locker room."

Great, like I wasn't nervous enough my first time in Virginia's football locker room. A dream come true, I had been telling myself. Now the dream was about to become a nightmare at the hands of a 6-7 offensive lineman who was somehow a cross between a professional surfer and a young member of the Hells Angels. Right before I could impress the whole team with my blazing speed toward the door, the guy started laughing and said, "Hey, I'm Bart. Sorry, I just had to mess with you. What's your name?"

  • Drink Up: Three Views of UVa's Season, John Galinsky

Three Virginia football fans - an optimist, a pessimist and a realist - are in a bar talking about the 2004 season. The optimist sips white wine and enjoys the light buzz as he dreams of ACC championships and Orange Bowls. The realist savors his pint of Guinness. He'd like to have another, but he's a man of moderation. The pessimist throws back his fourth shot of Scotch and says, a bit too loudly, "Here's why Hagans ain't gonna work out at quarterback."

  • Five Essential Wins for UVa Football, Greg Waters

This is the time of year when fans, sportswriters and even coaches start to discuss the critical, must-win games of the year. Here's a scoop: To win the ACC title and compete for a national title, Virginia will likely need to win all of its games. But each year there are games that mean a little something extra. These are essential wins. What are essential wins? Essential wins are statement games. Essential wins are victories that defy precedent or are in some way unique. There are five games this season that meet the benchmark of essential wins.
