Terry Holland's decision to step down from his latest job at UVa -- yet another job that he did exceedingly well -- gives us another chance to appreciate the man's contributions to the University.

No one, it's safe to say, has made a bigger impact on UVa athletics across the board as Holland. He remains the school's all-time winningest men's basketball coach, compiling a record of 326-173 in 16 seasons, but that's not all. He later became athletic director and presided over a major upgrade in the school's athletic facilities, including the renovation of Scott Stadium and the construction of the Aquatic-Fitness Center. John Paul Jones Arena, the new basketball venue under construction, is also his baby to some extent. He has helped raise funds for it as a special assistant to the school's president for the past three years.

This week Holland, 62, stepped down and said he will seek a new career path. Whatever that entails, he says he will remain involved in UVa athletics and will stay part of the Cavalier community. That's great news because beyond his accomplishments, his friendliness and thoughtfulness made him one of the most popular members of that community for the past three decades.

After all, he's the guy who helped bring both Ralph Sampson and Al Groh to UVa. He's a uniter, not a divider.

Terry Holland for President?

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Football recruiting...

UVa is now up to 19 commitments with the addition of William Fleming High School (Roanoke, Va.) inside linebacker target Darryl Gresham. One of the top 10 players in the state, Gresham likely was one of Virginia's primary targets at the linebacker position. He and Salem (N.J.) linebacker Lamont Robinson provide the Cavaliers with two excellent talents at the need position of inside linebacker. The Cavs also remain heavily involved and may be at the top for Bergen Catholic (N.J.) linebacker Brian Cushing.

2004 recruits Olu Hall (right) and Branden Albert will attend Hargrave Military Academy. Albert is expected to attend for one year and Hall may have to do the same. Assuming they both stay for one year, UVa would have only four scholarships remaining for the 2005 class (adding commits plus Hall and Albert). Both Hall and Albert are firm commitments to UVa.

With most of the class filled up, expect the rest of the summer to be relatively quiet. Running back is a primary need, but besides that look for the Cavs to go after the best players on their board.

    Post of the Week

Subject: This Class From a Defensive Standpoint
Posted by: CavStorm on Wed Jul 14 2004 12:54:38 PM
Message: Obviously among our remaining scholarships, it's imperative that we land at least 1 workhorse RB, and at least 1 "Super Athlete" with the versatility to play where need may arise (whether it's a natural WR like Williams, or a combo back like Macho etc...). However, I want to discuss this class from a defensive perspective for a minute. My contention is that if we land any 2 of Pommells, Cushing, Slocum, that we have compiled by far the brightest defensive class in UVa history.

This class is already basically a self-sufficient, cohesive defensive unit (with the addition of the aforementioned).

We have a great LB corps in this class, complete with great natural ILB and OLB candidates in Robinson, Gresham, Appelby, Burrell (and Cushing would be the perfect lead ILB to give the class dynamic versatility and explosiveness). Likewise, 1-2 of the earlier commits are candidates to move here if necessary - and Olu Hall will be joining the group as well, with hopefully a Spring 2005 headstart. That simply is as good a collection of LBs as any school could bring into their program in the span of a year - and should address lack of LB depth, attrition from the current roster for the future.

We already have a great tandem of CBs, with diverse but complementary styles of play. Mike Brown is probably the best athlete in the class (which might be the case even if we land a guy like Macho, as Brown is that athletically gifted IMHO). On the one side you have his polished, instinctive, quick explosiveness and leaping ability as a lockdown CB, and on the other you have Cook as the more green physical specimen with the incredible measurables and upside who will have a chance to mature into mastering the position - and if he does with his size and athletic ability, he should be a gem.

The Front 3 has added depth with numerous potential DE candidates. Though this is the one area that concerns me in our recruiting from time to time. Despite the depth on the current roster (with all of our top 6 DLs returning, and fast risers like Billyk emerging) we have still not been able to lure the ELITE NG/NT (unless you count Carter. However, if we can land a guy like Slocum (or a longer shot like Weston), as well as Fitzgerald, even those concerns would be amply addressed for the first time. All within this self-contained class.

Regardless: Robinson, Brown, Appleby, Gresham, Burrell, Cook, Field, Fuller, Clark (with the strong possibility of Pommells/Cushing, and still in the mix for numerous other elites with versatility like Macho) already make this the strongest deepest defensive class in UVa history IMO. Couldn't be happier with this class to date, and if we land Kitt and Brian, and then simply hit a HR on 2 of our ample remaining RB/S-ATH prospects... this becomes simply as *perfect* a class as you could possibly design at UVa.

    Great work Tribe!

    Chatman leaves UVa women's team

Deidra Chatman's long legs won't be running down the court at University Hall anymore. Instead, she hopes, they'll be striding down the runway at major fashion shows in the future.

Chatman, a 6-6 center, has left the Virginia women's basketball team partly to pursue a modelling career. She recently traveled to Milan, Italy, and says she will return there to continue discussions with modelling agencies.

An engaging personality, Chatman did not make a major impact on the court for the Cavaliers in two seasons. She played in 23 games as a sophomore, starting two, and averaged 2.7 points and 1.6 rebounds. She plans to remain at UVa to complete her degree requirements.

"We will miss Deidra on the court, but she will still be a part of our basketball family," said UVa coach Debbie Ryan.

Doyle Smith memorial service: Aug. 1

A memorial service for Doyle Smith is scheduled for August 1 at UVa's Alumni Hall. Smith, a member of the UVa athletics media relations office staff for 31 years before his retirement in 1999 and a legend in the lacrosse community, died on June 1 at the age of 60.

The service is scheduled for 2-5 p.m. Individuals are requested to send in or bring written anecdotes about Doyle. Anecdotes can be e-mailed to Doyle's sisters, Laurie Filstrup ([email protected]) and Debby Cunningham ([email protected]) or mailed to Rich Murray, Athletics Media Relations Office, P.O. Box 400853, Charlottesville, VA, 22904-4853. There will be an opportunity for individuals to tell stories or say a few words about Doyle during the service.

  • 2005 Recruiting War Room #3: Offense, Chris Horne

Image: Vic HallWith only about four scholarships remaining, Virginia is quickly running out of spots in the 2005 class. The Cavaliers already have landed quality talent on offense, but they would like to add a few more recruits on this side of the ball to go along with quarterback Vic Hall. With needs at offensive line and wide receiver close to filled, running back now appears to be the top focus on offense. UVa is involved with several top-notch RB prospects.

  • Becoming (Gasp!) a Recruiting Junkie?, John Galinsky

I have a confession to make. I hate recruiting. Following it, that is. Sure, I take notice when a kid commits to Virginia, but I've never paid much attention to the chase, the day-to-day, who's-leaning-where type of stuff. My attitude has always been: Wake me in February and tell me whom we've got.

For better or worse - probably for worse - that's starting to change. Just in the few months that I've been editor of TheSabre.com, I've come down with a mild case of recruiting fever. It's a sickness, I know, but it's also sort of fun, isn't it?

  • Long, Brown and Lescanec: Hometown Heroes?, Jerry Miller

Image: Chris LongCharlottesville may be the No. 1 place to live, according to a recent book, but it's not the No. 1 place for high school football. Few players have gone from the city's schools to Mr. Jefferson's University and made much of an impact on the football field. But as the Cavaliers continue to gather top talent from all over the country, three incoming freshmen didn't have to drive far to join the program. Chris Long, Devonta Brown and Bryan Lescanec are a rarity in UVa football recruiting, local boys who hope to become hometown heroes.

  • O-Line has Oodles of Experience, Too Much Youth?, Greg Waters

Image: Elton BrownFootball games are won and lost in the trenches. It's been said so often that it's become a cliché, but there's a lot of truth in that statement. It's no surprise that three of the last four national champions started at least three seniors on the offensive line. So what does that mean for Virginia? Hard to say. This season the Cavaliers return seven offensive linemen who have combined for 112 starts, including guard Elton Brown, yet they still possess one of the youngest lines in the ACC in terms of age and time in the program.
