Fall may be the most exciting time of year for Virginia fans, thanks to football, but spring is increasingly the most successful season for the Cavaliers.

Men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse and rowing all are regular national championship contenders. Now it looks like you can add baseball and men's tennis to the list. Those sports made huge strides this spring and appear poised to move into elite territory in the near future. Assuming the men's lacrosse team bounces back from its uncharacteristically poor 2004 season, UVa fans should have plenty to cheer about as the weather warms up every year.

This spring four teams (and several track and field athletes) qualified for the NCAAs in their sports, two won ACC titles and one (women's lax) claimed the national championship. Not bad, considering lacrosse was the only competitive spring sport at Virginia just a decade ago.

Now that summer is right around the corner, however, it's time to start focusing on football again. Recruiting news, player features, opponent outlooks, analysis and opinions about the upcoming season. Read it all at TheSabre.com all summer long, with most of the content exclusive to Edge subscribers. And while you're at it, before we get ahead of ourselves, please check out this edition of SabreMail.

       News, Rumors and Fan Discussion

    Baseball falls as regional host

    UVa coach Brian O'Connor.
Following the best regular season in its history, the Virginia baseball team ran out of magic in the postseason.

The Cavaliers earned the right to host an NCAA regional for the first time, but they lost their opener against Princeton and (two wins later) were ousted by Vanderbilt last weekend. That completed a 2-4 postseason for UVa, which dropped two straight in the ACC tournament.

Still, it was a memorable season for the baseball program, which drew sellout crowds throughout the regional and tied a school record for victories with 44.

"We took a giant step forward this year," said Brian O'Connor, Virginia's first-year coach. "Addressing the team after the [final] game, I pointed to the crowd and said, 'You guys have captured this community.'

"All that is a big part of building a nationally powerful baseball program - getting attendance and getting people to support your team. And I'll tell you what, this community has rallied around this team. I'm excited for the future."

Four Cavaliers picked in MLB draft

    Andrew Dobies
A year after no Virginia baseball players were picked in the major league draft, four Cavaliers were selected by pro clubs Monday and Tuesday.

Andrew Dobies, who went 6-2 with a 3.41 ERA, was taken in the third round by the Boston Red Sox, the earliest a UVa player has been picked in seven years. The Colorado Rockies took Joe Koshansky, the ACC player of the year, in the sixth round. Koshansky hit 16 home runs, half of Virginia's total, and went 8-3 with a 2.98 ERA.

Also selected were shortstop Mark Reynolds (16th round, Diamondbacks) and pitcher Jeff Kamrath (36th round, Indians). Kamrath redshirted last season with an elbow injury.

Dobies, Reynolds and Kamrath all have one season of eligibility remaining. Dobies says he plans to sign with the Red Sox, but Reynolds and Kamrath are expected to stick around and play for the Cavaliers next season.

Jorgensen going for NCAA javelin championship

In 2001, Inge Jorgensen finished fourth in the javelin at the NCAA track and field championships. After that, she missed two years with a torn quadriceps tendon and a torn elbow ligament. But now she's back where she was three years ago.

A fifth-year student, Jorgensen is one of two Cavaliers competing in the NCAA meet this week in Austin, Texas. The other is Kellen Blassingame in the men's 400-meter dash.

Six Cavs to compete in Chitengwa Championship

Play begins today in the third annual Lewis Chitengwa Memorial Championship, the Canadian Tour event created in honor of the UVa golfer who died of meningoccocous poisoning in 2001.

The tournament, held at Stoney Creek Course at Wintergreen, will include six current or former Cavaliers: Fred Widicus (1988-91), Jimmy Flippen (1992-95), Steve Marino (1999-02), Justin Goodhue (2000-03), Jeremy Luce (2001-04), and rising senior Kevin O'Connell. O'Connell earned one of four available spots by firing a 1-over 73 at Birdwood Golf Course last Monday.

"All in all, it's great to have our guys here for a tournament that honors one of our greatest ever," said UVa coach Mike Moraghan, also the tournament director.

Chitengwa was a two-time All-American at UVa. His 17-year-old brother, Farai, will compete in the tournament and 14 UVa student-athletes will serve as caddies, including Wali Lundy and J.R. Reynolds.

Mountjoy named voice of Cavalier marching band

Dick Mountjoy, who has hosted WINA's morning radio show for the past 10 years, will be the "Voice of the Cavalier Marching Band."

Mountjoy will be the band's halftime stadium announcer. He has been a popular radio figure in the Charlottesville area for nearly 40 years.

Also joining the marching band at halftime of the Oct. 7 game against Clemson will be The Temptations, the legendary Motown recording artists.

    Herenda won't join Gillen's staff

East Carolina assistant Greg Herenda interviewed with UVa men's basketball coach Pete Gillen a few weeks ago, but his current school ended up giving him an offer he couldn't refuse.

ECU promoted Herenda to associate head coach, so he withdrew his name from consideration for the Virginia position. The Cavaliers still have two vacancies to fill on Gillen's staff with the departures of Rod Jensen and Scott Shepherd. Shepherd was hired as Ferrum's head coach on Wednesday.
