It's Graduation Weekend at UVa. And Baseball Weekend. And Lacrosse Weekend. And Tennis Weekend.

If soon-to-be alumni and their families want to do something around Grounds besides hit the White Spot one last time, there are plenty of sports events worth watching. The baseball team, seeking to secure first place in the ACC, is in the midst of a three-game series with Wake Forest. The men's tennis team is hosting the opening rounds of the NCAA tournament. And the women's lacrosse team also is in NCAA tourney mode at Klockner Stadium. To find out game times and more about each of UVa's still-active teams, as well as the latest recruiting news, please peruse this edition of SabreMail.

And no matter what happens, keep in mind that the most amazing achievement by the Cavaliers over the weekend was finding accommodations for all of the visiting athletes. On Graduation Weekend, that's a small miracle.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Football recruiting...

UVa continued its run of football commitments this week, receiving the 12th and 13th verbal pledges for the 2005 recruiting class.

The first commit for this week was Kevin Crawford, a 6-4, 280-pound defensive line prospect out of Gar-Field High School in Woodbridge, Virginia. Crawford, although raw in terms of experience, is a very physically talented prospect. He runs under a 5.0 in the 40-yard dash and has over a 30-inch vertical leap. He chose UVa over offers from Syracuse and Kent State and interest from Maryland and Virginia Tech.

Brandon Woods, a 6-2, 205-pound wide receiver/defensive back target from Southern Durham (N.C.) High School, was the second prospect to commit this week. Woods chose UVa over Clemson, Nebraska, and Tennessee, among others. He becomes the second Southern Durham prospect to commit to the 'Hoos, joining WR/LB Maurice Covington. UVa is also recruiting LB/RB Charles Gamble, who is considered one of the top prospects in the state.

Basketball recruiting...

According to Tilton (NH) coach Scott Willard, UVa has offered 6-9, 240-pound power forward prospect Alfred Aboya. Aboya, who averaged 20 points and double-digit rebounds as a junior, also boasts offers from Georgetown and George Washington. He committed to Georgetown before the coaching change, but has since reneged his verbal. Willard indicated UVa is seriously in the running and will likely receive an official visit this fall.

UVa baseball on top of ACC

Andrew Dobies
Over the past 15 years, the Virginia baseball team has never finished higher than fifth in the ACC standings. A move into the upper half of the league would have represented nice progress for the program in Brian O'Connor's first season as head coach. Instead, the Cavaliers are skipping the baby steps and trying to take a big leap forward.

"We want to finish first," said shortstop Mark Reynolds. "That's been our goal all season."

And Virginia is on the verge of achieving it. Thanks to yet another comeback victory Thursday night, the Cavaliers are now 38-11 overall and 16-6 in the ACC, a game and a half ahead of Georgia Tech. With two conference games remaining, tonight (7 p.m.) and Saturday afternoon (2 p.m.) against Wake Forest at Davenport Field, UVa can finish atop the ACC standings for the first time since 1985 and earn the top seed in next week's conference tournament.

Thursday's 5-4 win over the Demon Deacons was the latest dramatic rally for the Cardiac Cavs. Down 4-0, they scored three runs in the eighth inning, another in the ninth on a two-out bloop single and finally won it on Scott Headd's bases-loaded single in the 10th.

    Californians lead UVa tennis team

Two are from southern California. One is from northern California. One is from Ohio. One is from Kentucky. And one is from Slovakia.

The top six players on Virginia's men's tennis team came a long way to attend UVa, and now they have taken the Cavaliers into what coach Brian Boland calls "uncharted territory" for the program -- an ACC championship and a No. 6 seed in the NCAA tournament.

    Doug Stewart
Fresh off its first ACC title in 51 years of league play, Virginia (22-3) is hosting the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament, also for the first time. The Cavaliers are playing American today at 10 a.m., followed by Mississippi State and Wake Forest at 2 p.m., with the winners matching serves Saturday at 1 p.m. All matches are at the Snyder Tennis Center and are free to the public.

No matter how UVa fares this year, the program's future looks extraordinarily bright. All of the team's top six players are freshmen and sophomores.

"This just gives us a little taste of success," said sophomore Rylan Rizza. "I want to win at least two national championships. We have a great chance the next two years, but I also think we can make a run at it now."

    Women's lacrosse advances in NCAAs

    Amy Appelt
After losing in overtime to Princeton in last year's national championship game, the Virginia women's lacrosse team has been striving to return to the Final Four. Now the Cavaliers are just one game away from doing so.

Second-ranked UVa routed Mount St. Mary's, 19-2, in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Thursday, setting up a quarterfinal matchup with Northwestern on Sunday at 3 p.m. -- shortly after graduation ceremonies, for those who might want to wander over to Klockner Stadium.

The Cavaliers (16-3) have won seven straight games and 12 of their past 13. The biggest reason for that success has been the play of junior attacker Amy Appelt, who leads the nation with 78 goals and 106 points. She had three goals and four assists Thursday to lead the team, while Tyler Leachman also delivered three goals.

    Softball team in ACC tourney

Virginia teams already have won six ACC championships this school year, bettering the previous school record of four. The UVa softball team has a chance to add another title to the list this weekend.

The Cavaliers (38-24, 6-4 ACC) enter the ACC tournament in Tallahassee, Fla., as the third seed. They face sixth-seeded Maryland today at 1:30 p.m., and, with a win, will move on to play second-seeded North Carolina at 7:30 p.m.

The favorite in the six-team, double-elimination tourney is top-seeded and second-ranked Florida State (54-9, 9-1 ACC). Virginia has reached the championship game four times in the past six years but has not won the title since 1994.

Three Cavaliers made the 15-member All-ACC softball team: senior shortstop Heather Field, senior first baseman Hannah Owings and sophomore second/third baseman Sara Larquier.

    UVa women hire two assistants

Virginia women's basketball coach Debbie Ryan filled the two vacancies on her coaching staff by hiring Tom Garrick and Jen Hoover as assistants.

Garrick starred for the Rhode Island men's basketball team in the late '80s and has been an assistant coach for both the Rhode Island men's and women's teams over the past six years. Hoover, the best player in Wake Forest women's basketball history, was UVa's director of women's basketball operations last season.

They are replacing Audra Smith and Daryl Oliver, who moved on to the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Smith was hired as UAB's head coach and Oliver, her brother-in-law, came along as an assistant.

Tanzania Williams was hired to replace Hoover as director of women's basketball operations. She is the sister of Tamika Williams, a former UConn star now playing in the WNBA.
