At last, final exams are over. Time to hit the beach, head home, find a summer job or get ready for graduation. Unless, of course, you're a member of the Virginia baseball, softball, track, rowing, lacrosse or men's tennis teams. In that case, your work isn't quite done. In fact, for many Cavalier athletes, the most important games and events remain on the horizon. Among those in action this weekend are Brian O'Connor's baseball players, who will be hosting Florida State in a huge three-game series at Davenport Field. The ACC baseball and softball tournaments come later along with the NCAA championships in tennis, rowing, track and lacrosse. It's been a spectacular spring for many of UVa's teams so far, and the best may be yet to come. Read about Virginia's chances in each sport, along with the latest recruiting news, in today's SabreMail!

This Week In Recruiting By Chris Horne Basketball recruiting...
Another major target who made an unofficial visit to UVa on Monday is Seton Hall Prep (West Orange, NJ) power forward Brandon Costner. The Cavaliers face stiff competition for the 6-8, 220-pound Costner, who boasts offers from Connecticut, Florida, Michigan, Indiana, and Kansas in addition to UVa. A smooth left hander, Costner would be an excellent addition to a recruiting class that needs at least two top low-post players. UVa commitment Laurynas Mikalauskas scored a game-high 17 points in the Southern Invitational Championship game. Going head-to-head with Costner, Mikalauskas scored 10 of his team's first 21 points, helping Boo Williams' squad capture the SIT title with a 72-64 victory over the Playaz. Next up for Boo Williams is the state competition, which takes place in Richmond this weekend.

Big crowds expected for FSU-UVa baseball series
Yeah, it was corny in "Field of Dreams," but it seemed just as unreaslitic at UVa, where anonymous donors helped fund the construction of UVa Baseball Stadium three years ago. At the time, spending $4 million and putting in 2,000 seats for a team that was lucky to draw 100 fans to its games didn't appear to make much sense. But now look. The Cavaliers may sell out all three of their games against Florida State this weekend, and that's despite adding nearly 400 temporary bleacher seats along the right-field line. Why? Apparently, fans want to see a winner. Virginia is 36-9 overall and first in the ACC at 14-4 going into the series against the Seminoles (29-17, 8-7 ACC). Friday's and Saturday's games begin at 7 p.m., while Sunday's finale starts at 1 p.m. Saturday's game already is sold out. Several hundred tickets remain for the Friday and Sunday games, though those might be gone by opening pitch. Fans are encouraged to order tickets online at www.virginiasports.com or by calling the UVa Ticket Office at 1-800-542-8821 or (434) 924-8821. Men's tennis, women's lax, rowing teams await NCAAs They're already ACC champions. Now they're waiting to prove themselves on a national stage. That goes for Virginia's teams in men's tennis, women's lacrosse and rowing. All three won conference titles last month and will compete in NCAA competition later this month. Two of them will get to play at home in the early rounds.
The women's lacrosse team, ranked No. 2 in the country, also should get home games in the opening two rounds when the NCAA tournament field is announced this weekend. The rowing team will compete in the Central/South Region Sprints next weekend in Oak Ridge, Tenn., followed by the NCAA championships May 28-30 in Rancho Cordova, Calif. Several UVa track athletes also will participate in the NCAA East Regionals at the end of the month, while the Virginia softball team (38-24, 6-4 ACC) plays in the ACC tournament next weekend in Tallahassee, Fla. For more information on all of these UVa teams, please see the link below.
Men's lacrosse team finishes disappointing season May is normally the most important month for the Virginia men's lacrosse team. Now it's pretty much irrelevant. The Cavaliers conclude their season Saturday at Penn State with no hope of advancing to the NCAA tournament for the 12th straight year. Teams must have at least a .500 record to be eligible for the NCAAs. Virginia, the defending national champion, is 5-7. The good news? Only two starters will complete their eligibility this season. The bad news? Those two are goalie Tillman Johnson and defenseman Brett Hughes, both All-Americans. For more information on UVa men's lacrosse, please see the link below.
Three Cavs face trials for misdemeanors
Marques Hagans, the likely starter at quarterback next season, defensive back Brandon Lee and safety Kenneth Tynes all were charged with misdemeanors when they did not clear the crime scene following the incident, according to police. Hagans and Lee were charged with disorderly conduct, while Tynes was charged with vandalism after hurling a chair through a window. The trial for Tynes will be May 21 at Albemarle General District Court. Hagans and Lee will have their case heard June 1. Aaron Joshua Robinson, a 23-year-old UVa engineering student, turned himself into the police last Thursday. He faces a felony charge in Winborne's shooting. For a column on the incident, Edge subscribers can check out the link below.
Appelt, Johnson, Moore named top UVa athletes Amy Appelt, Tillman Johnson and Scott Moore were honored as UVa's top female and male athletes for the 2003-04 academic year at Virginia's annual awards dinner last week. Appelt, a junior attacker on the women's lacrosse team, received the IMP Award as the top female athlete. She leads the nation in scoring with 99 points (75 goals, 24 assists). Johnson and Moore shared the WINA award as the top male athlete. Johnson, a senior goalie on the men's lacrosse team, led the Cavaliers to the national championship in 2003 and made the All-ACC team for the third time this season. He is one of 15 candidates for the Tewaaraton Trophy, awarded to the nation's top player.
Moore, a graduate student, won the 141-pound championship at the ACC wrestling tournament and earned All-America honors by finishing third in that weight class at the NCAA championships. He won six other tournament championships and compiled an overall record of 51-1 with 34 victories by fall. The Cavaliers hired him as an assistant coach this week.
