Shhhhhh.

What's that noise? It's not the ping of an aluminum bat. It's not the pop of a tennis serve. It's not the clattering of lacrosse sticks. No, it's the sound of Virginia student-athletes doing what they're supposed to be doing this time of year.studying. (Let's hope so, anyway.) The stadiums around Grounds will be empty for the next week as the Cavaliers take final exams for the spring semester. It's a good time for UVa fans to remember that your favorite college athletes also are college students. And for those of us no longer in school, to be thankful that we're not the ones cramming for Calculus 201.

Still, the past week was an eventful one for many of UVa's teams, especially women's lacrosse, which captured its first ACC championship in six years. The baseball team had a wild series with Miami, the men's lacrosse team fell just short of an ACC crown and the softball team soared up the ACC standings. The football team continued to reel in recruits, while Matt Schaub learned his NFL destination. And there also was a shocking incident that proved not all was quiet at UVa this week: Jamaine Winborne, a three-year starter at defensive back for the Cavaliers, was shot in the leg in front of a dorm while students were celebrating the end of classes.

Study all the UVa news in this edition of SabreMail. You'll be tested shortly.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Football recruiting...

UVa is now up to 11 verbal commitments for the 2005 recruiting class. Three more prospects committed this week, including Columbia High School (Maplewood, NJ) prospect Denzel Burrell and in-state standouts Rockbridge High School defensive end/tight end Aaron Clark and Heritage High School (Lynchburg) defensive back Chris Cook.

Burrell is 6-4 and weighs 205 pounds. As a junior, playing defensive end, Burrell had 75 tackles, 23 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, and 26 QB hurries. He will play outside linebacker at Virginia. He chose the 'Hoos over interest from Iowa, Penn State, Maryland, and UNC, among others.

At 6-6, 230 pounds, Aaron Clark is yet another jumbo athlete type of prospect. With his 4.7 speed, he could easily become a tight end on the next level or could even play outside linebacker in the mold of current Cavalier Vince Redd. Other possible positions, depending on how much weight he gains at UVa, are defensive end and offensive tackle.

Chris Cook, the most recent commitment (Thursday), is a 6-2, 185-pound cornerback prospect. He shows a good combination of size and speed. He posted a 4.49 in the 40 during the Nike Camp in Charlottesville earlier this month. He had offers from UVa and Virginia Tech.

All of these prospects have fully qualified.

Basketball recruiting...

Fans should check out the Southern Invitational Tournament this weekend in Charlottesville. UVa's newest and only 2005 commit, Laurynas Mikalauskas, will be on display for Boo Williams' AAU squad. The event begins this evening and lasts through Sunday. For further information, check out www.hoopgroup.com.

   News, Rumors and Fan Discussion

Cavalier women win ACC lax title

To be honest, Julie Myers admits, she wasn't sure how her Virginia women's lacrosse team would handle adversity. The Cavaliers lost two of their best players to knee injuries in the first two games of the season. They already had to replace three All-Americans who graduated the year before.

"I didn't know how fast they would come together and how ready they were to deal with stuff like that," Myers said. "But everyone has stepped up and risen to the occasion. It shows that there's something special about this team."

After early losses to Syracuse and Princeton, the Cavaliers have won 11 of 12 games, including six in a row. They beat Maryland and Duke last weekend in Chapel Hill to earn their first ACC title in six years. Their 17-7 rout of the Blue Devils on Sunday secured the championship.

"We were so on, it didn't matter who we were playing," Myers said. "We were going to win."

Virginia now has six ACC championships this school year, having already won them in men's soccer, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's tennis and women's rowing. The previous UVa record was four for a single school year.

Falcons take Schaub in third round

Only one Cavalier was chosen in the NFL draft last weekend, but it was one of the best players in school history. Matt Schaub, who owns most of the UVa passing records, was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the third round on Saturday.

Figuring he would go in the second or third round, Schaub played golf Saturday afternoon and returned home to watch the draft on television. He finally got the call at 9:58 p.m. when the Falcons took him with the 90th pick overall.

In Atlanta, Schaub and veteran Ty Detmer are expected to compete for the No. 2 job at quarterback behind Michael Vick. Is that a good situation for him? Edge subscribers can read this story about Schaub's NFL future:

Winborne shot in front of dorm

A cookout to celebrate the last day of classes nearly took a tragic turn Wednesday night when former Cavalier defensive back Jamaine Winborne was shot in the leg outside Hench dormitory after a dispute with another student. Fortunately, the injury was not life-threatening, but the senior's NFL career may be in jeopardy. Winborne, who was not selected in last weekend's draft, had just signed a free-agent contract with the New York Giants.

Aaron Joshua Robinson, a 23-year-old UVa engineering student, turned himself into the police Thursday. He faces a felony charge in Winborne's shooting.

Three other UVa football players were arrested shortly after the shooting when a group of students refused to leave the crime scene and cursed at officers, police said.

Marques Hagans, the likely starter at quarterback next season, and defensive back Brandon Lee were charged with disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor. Kenneth Tynes, a safety, was charged with vandalism, also a misdemeanor. He is accused of hurling a chair through a window near the shooting scene.

Baseball team salvages win vs. Miami

In three games against No. 4 Miami last weekend, the Virginia baseball team was outscored by a total of 33-6. But, all things considered, it wasn't a bad trip.

After getting routed by scores of 8-0 and 22-3 in the first two games, the Cavaliers used a two-run rally in the ninth inning to steal a 4-3 victory in Sunday's finale. Tom Hagan and Matt Street each had an RBI single off Miami closer George Huguet, who had not allowed an earned run all season. Joe Koshansky (7-1) pitched a complete game for Virginia, allowing eight hits and striking out six.

Did someone say rally? UVa did it again Tuesday at home, scoring twice in the bottom of the ninth to beat Radford, 3-2. This time Tim Henry and Street knocked in the tying and winning runs, respectively.

Those comebacks were nothing new for the No. 10 Cavaliers (36-9), who have overcome late deficits in many of their victories and are now 10-2 in one-run games. In first place in the ACC, Virginia has a big three-game series at home against Florida State next weekend.

Pair of doubleheader sweeps for UVa softball

In a span of two days, the Virginia softball team went from the bottom half of the ACC standings to the top half. That's because the Cavaliers swept N.C. State and Maryland last weekend, improving their record to 6-4 in conference play.

Sophomore pitcher Erin Horn won three of the four games, including one in relief, and Joanna Barstad won the other with a one-hitter against the Terrapins.

UVa's nine-game winning streak came to a halt Tuesday in a 6-3 loss to Virginia Tech, ending the regular season, but the Cavaliers (39-24) still are in good shape going into the ACC tournament in two weeks.

Cavaliers fall just short in ACC men's lacrosse

It has been a surprisingly successful spring for many of Virginia's teams, but not in men's lacrosse. One year after winning the national championship, the Cavaliers will finish with a losing record and out of the NCAA tournament for the first time in Dom Starsia's 12 years as head coach.

UVa needed to win the ACC championship last weekend, then beat Penn State on May 8, to be eligible for the NCAAs. After beating North Carolina 11-9 in the semifinals, the Cavaliers fell to Maryland 12-11 in Sunday's title game. Down 12-7, Virginia rallied and had a chance to force overtime, but Joe Yevoli's pass to Foster Gilbert went awry in the final seconds.

Three Cavaliers made the All-ACC team: goalie Tillman Johnson, attackman Matt Ward and defenseman Brett Hughes.
