ACC champion.

It's a designation to which all UVa teams aspire. And for many, it has become a reality this school year. The men's tennis and women's rowing teams claimed conference titles last weekend, joining the men's soccer and both swimming and diving teams. That's five ACC championships in one year, a record for Virginia, and there may be more to come. Both lacrosse teams will compete in ACC tournaments this weekend in Chapel Hill, while the baseball team is in first place and riding a 14-game winning streak.

In other words, these are exciting times in Cavalier athletics. Just this week, the men's basketball team gained its first commitment for the 2005 recruiting class and the football team received its eighth commitment from an 11th-grader. Matt Schaub, the most prolific passer in school history, is readying himself for this weekend's NFL draft. Get up to speed on the current and future champions by reading this edition of SabreMail!

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Football recruiting...

Aaron Clark
DE/TE Aaron Clark
Another week, another commitment for the UVa football program. This week, Cardinal O'Hara High School (Springfield, PA) offensive line prospect Matt Lowry verbally committed to the Wahoos, giving UVa a total of eight commitments. Lowry is 6-6, 315 pounds, and has the potential to play guard or tackle on the next level. He chose UVa over an offer from Syracuse and he also drew serious interest from many Big Ten programs, including Penn State and Michigan.

The number of commitments could continue to rise within the next week or so. Rockbridge High School (VA) star Aaron Clark received an offer this week from UVa, where he has camped every summer since he was a freshman. UVa has been his favorite for a long time. Clark, who is a 6-6, 230-pound defensive end/tight end, will visit Virginia Tech this weekend and may have a decision as early as next week. Only UVa has offered at this point.

Centreville (Clifton, VA) offensive tackle/defensive end prospect Pat Sheil may decide soon as well. He visits Virginia Tech this weekend and is considering offers from Maryland, Nebraska, Syracuse, UVa, Virginia Tech, Army, and Wake Forest. Penn State, Southern California, and Ohio State are among the schools showing heavy interest in the 6-7, 260-pound prospect. Sheil currently favors UVa and may decide soon. He wants to decide at least before the start of his senior season.

Basketball recruiting...

Fans can expect 6-11, 225-pound Montrose Christian (Rockville, MD) center Tunji Soroye to fax in his Letter of Intent to UVa at any moment. Montrose Christian assistant coach David Atkins confirmed earlier this week that Soroye remains committed to UVa.

UVa picked up a nice commitment earlier this week from Blue Ridge School (Dyke, VA) power forward Laurynas Mikalauskas. Mikalauskas, a 6-8, 240-pound prospect who is originally from Lithuania, averaged 18 points and 10 boards per game as a junior this season. He chose the Cavaliers over offers from Maryland, Clemson, West Virginia and Virginia Tech. He becomes the first prospect to commit for the 2005 recruiting class.

    Baseball Fever strikes Charlottesville

    Coach Brian O'Connor
    Coach Brian O'Connor
Until recently, the notion of a UVa baseball sellout seemed pretty preposterous. But Davenport Field already has had a capacity crowd of 2,000 on hand twice this season -- first for a doubleheader sweep of Clemson on April 10, then for a 21-10 rout of Virginia Tech two days ago.

"We've talked about what we're trying to build here," first-year head coach Brian O'Connor said after Wednesday's game. "A night like tonight is what it's all about."

The victory over the Hokies was Virginia's 14th straight, surpassing the previous school record by two. The 15th-ranked Cavaliers (34-7) will take that streak to Florida, where they will play No. 4 Miami in a three-game series this weekend.

"This is going to put us on the map," said senior pitcher/DH Joe Koshansky.

    Cavalier tennis making a racket

    Coach Brian Boland
    Coach Brian Boland
When men's tennis coach Brian Boland brought in a killer recruiting class two years ago, he figured his team would contend for an ACC championship in 2005 or 2006. Turns out the Cavaliers were ahead of schedule. They tied for first place in the regular season, then won the conference tournament last weekend in Raleigh, defeating Florida State, Duke and Clemson for the program's first league title.

"To actually win the ACC regular-season and team championship is a tremendous accomplishment for these players," Boland said. "They're young and they're getting better, and that makes me even more excited."

Virginia likely will host an NCAA regional May 14-16.

Football team holds real Spring Game

For the first time in Al Groh's four years as head football coach, the Cavaliers had enough healthy bodies to divide the roster into two teams for a spring game. More than 8,000 fans came to Scott Stadium last Saturday and watched the "Wahoos" beat the "Cavaliers" by a score of 10-7.

Wali Lundy rushed for 75 yards and threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Ottowa Anderson, but none of UVa's four quarterbacks had a particularly strong performance.

"I'd say that overall today the quarterback play was erratic," Groh said.

    Byars leaves basketball team

Derrick Byars became the latest member of the Virginia men's basketball program to leave with eligibility remaining.

Byars, who started 34 games in his two seasons at UVa, made that decision public this week. He is the sixth player who signed with UVa during Pete Gillen's six-year tenure as head coach to transfer to another school.

"We appreciate Derrick's contributions to our basketball program for the past two years," Gillen said in a statement. "We wish him the best in his future endeavors."

Byars averaged 6.5 points and 2.9 rebounds for Virginia as a freshman. He averaged 7.5 points and 3.4 rebounds last season but slumped badly after a fast start.

Crew team wins championship -- again

Few teams in the ACC dominate their conference opponents quite like the Virginia women's rowing team. The Cavaliers won every event at the ACC regatta last Saturday to capture their fifth straight league title, sweeping the varsity four, novice eight, second varsity eight and first varsity eight races at Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.

Virginia's first varsity eight boat was recognized as 2004 ACC Crew of the Year, winning that event in 6:34.3. The crew consisted of coxswain Betty Shumaker, Jennifer Reck, Lindsay Shoop, Beth Clark, Kathryn Waller, Margaret Matia, Sara Lippa, Genevieve Cauchon-Voyer and Melanie Kok.

Virginia's Kevin Sauer was named 2004 ACC coach of the year. Under Sauer's guidance, the team has now won 19 of the 20 races in the five ACC championships.

    Lacrosse teams seek ACC titles

The Virginia men's lacrosse team would like to defend its national championship next month. To do so, it first must successfully defend its ACC championship.

The Cavaliers (4-6) have struggled a year after claiming both titles. To be eligible for the NCAA tournament, a team must be at least .500, so Virginia must repeat as ACC champ with two wins this weekend in Chapel Hill, then beat Penn State on May 8.

UVa, the third seed, will face second-seeded North Carolina (7-3) in tonight's second semifinal at 8:30. The final will be Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

The Cavalier women (12-3) are in much better shape going into their ACC semifinal against Maryland today at 3:30 p.m. Having won nine of their past 10 games, they are all but assured of an NCAA tournament berth, but ACC player of the year Amy Appelt and her teammates surely would like to capture their first conference championship since 1998.

    Schaub awaiting NFL draft

Matt Schaub won't be sitting around on the couch Saturday, waiting for his name to be called on the first day of the 2004 NFL draft. Instead, UVa's career passing leader will be on the golf course with his cell phone. He is expected to be picked in the second or third round.

"I'm really excited," Schaub said. "I'm anxious to see what happens, and where my next move is going to be. I want to know where I'm going to be playing, get there, start learning and begin to take in the system and learn how to be an NFL quarterback."
