What a wonderful weekend to be a Wahoo!

The sun is expected to shine on Scott Stadium as the Virginia football team holds its annual spring festival -- complete with a real game this time -- on Saturday afternoon. Fans can participate in the festivities beginning at 10:30 a.m., with the players taking the field at 12:30 p.m. Afterward, many former players, coaches, alumni and fans will gather for a barbeque dinner at Memorial Gymnasium in honor of Frank McCue, UVa's team doctor (and so much more) for more than four decades. It's also an important weekend for the surging baseball and men's tennis teams, not to mention a big recruiting weekend in football. Check it all out in this edition of SabreMail!

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Football recruiting.

Vic Hall
QB Vicqual Hall
It's early April, but this weekend promises to be a big one for the UVa football program. Many prospects will be on hand Saturday for the spring football game and Sunday for the Nike Camp.

Among the players to be on hand at least one day this weekend are UVa commitments QB Vic Hall and TE/OLB/DE Jason Fuller. Both plan on at least attending the Nike Camp on Sunday. Joining Hall will be Gretna teammate Horace Hubbard.

Other key in-state targets in Charlottesville include Varina's mammoth DT Joseph Johnson, Oscar Smith QB/Ath Greg Boone, Hermitage DE Jeffrey Fitzgerald, Centreville OT Pat Sheil, William Fleming LB Darryl Gresham, Landstown LB/S Deveon Simmons, GW-Danville S Cameron Martin, and Bethel CB Jamar Jackson. UVa has offered all of these prospects.

Big-time out-of-state targets RB Toney Baker (Ragsdale HS in NC) and Ath Derrick Williams (Eleanor Roosevelt HS in MD) are scheduled to be in attendance as well.

Stay tuned for more on the Nike Camp and the spring game attendees following this weekend.

Basketball recruiting.

A decision could come in the very near future from Blue Ridge School (Dyke, VA) PF Laurynas Mikalauskas. Mikalauskas, a 6-8, 240-pound power forward with very good offensive abilities, may decide between UVa and Virginia Tech soon. He has made an official visit to Virginia Tech and plans on making one to UVa in the coming weeks.

Mikalauskas averaged 18 points per game last season as a junior. He is playing for Boo Williams' AAU squad, which can be seen at the Southern Invitational in Charlottesville from April 30th thru May 2nd.

Spring Game springs forth

Darryl Blackstock

The Cavaliers already have chosen up sides for the first real spring game in Al Groh's four years as head football coach. There will be 12-minute quarters and full-contact collisions in the contest between the "Wahoos" of Mike London and the "Cavaliers" of Mike Groh.

In the first "UVa Player Allocation Draft," as Groh called it, the Wahoos selected linebacker Darryl Blackstock with the first pick. The Cavaliers followed by taking quarterback Marques Hagans. Groh, who will serve as commissioner, joked that the winning team "will eat a lot better" on Monday.

The 2004 Spring Football Festival is a free event with a number of activities beginning at 10:30 a.m., including:

  • Autograph signing area with UVa football alumni
  • Sumo wrestling

    Honoring Doc McCue

    Dr. Frank McCue III
    Dr. Frank McCue III
On the list of UVa legends, Frank C. McCue III ranks only slightly behind Thomas Jefferson. "Doc" was Virginia's team doctor from 1961-2002. He also was a professor of orthopedic surgery and the director of UVa's Division of Sports Medicine and Hand Surgery. Those job descriptions only scratch the surface of his impact on the sports and medical communities at UVa and throughout the state.

Which is why so many people are coming to Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday night to celebrate his life and career (and eat barbeque). Those interested in attending must RSVP by calling 434-982-5555 or 800-626-8723 by Friday at 5 p.m. Tickets will not be available at the door. Tickets are $50 each with a table of eight for $1,000.

"Medically, the man had flawless surgical technique. You were watching a master in the operating room," said Dr. Robert Franco, president of the Frank McCue Society. "More than that, he's just an unbelievable person. He had a passion for the subject and a compassion for the patients that was unsurpassed. His drive was insatiable."

    Baseball team riding nine-game streak

'Hoos the hottest team in the ACC? It's gotta be the Virginia baseball team, which has won nine straight games, including a three-game sweep of Clemson at Davenport Field last weekend. It was UVa's first series sweep of the Tigers since 1972 and it vaulted the Cavaliers into first place in the conference standings.

Now 29-7 overall and 11-4 in the ACC, Virginia will play three games at Maryland (16-18, 2-10 ACC) this weekend before returning home to face Norfolk State on Tuesday and Virginia Tech on Wednesday.

Men's tennis moves into top 10

The Virginia men's tennis team made history by capturing a share of the program's first ACC regular-season title. With their upset of No. 5 Duke last Sunday, the Cavaliers broke a 25-match losing streak to the Blue Devils and earned their first victory ever over a top-5 opponent.

Virginia (19-3, 7-1 ACC) also moved up to No. 10 in this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, marking the first top-ten ranking in the program's history. The Cavaliers will be the No. 2 seed for this weekend's ACC tournament in Raleigh, N.C., and will play No. 7 seed Florida State in Friday's quarterfinals.

    On the fast track

The Virginia men's and women's track and field teams each placed first at their host meet, the Lou Onesty/Milton G. Abramson Invitational held last Saturday. The Cavaliers won nine event titles and posted many NCAA Regional qualifying marks. The UVa men were tops out of 21 teams, while the women defeated 16 other squads.

Both teams will compete in the ACC championships Friday and Saturday at North Carolina. One favorite for an individual title is graduate student Inge Jorgensen, who is ranked first in the nation in the women's javelin.
