Howdy, Wahoo fans! There's a new SabreMail sheriff in town.

After putting together 132 of these issues, Mike Ingalls, your esteemed BoardHost, has happily handed me his badge and his trusty keyboard. For a week now, I've been TheSabre.com's General Manager and Editor in Chief, and so far it's been a blast writing stories and interacting on the message boards. Luckily, I came onboard during an eventful week in UVa athletics. The baseball team swept Duke and is riding a six-game winning streak. Audra Smith, a longtime assistant to Debbie Ryan, got a head coaching job at UAB. The football team, in the middle of spring practice, received two more commitments from coveted recruits. But it was also a week to revel in the program's proud past as George Welsh was selected for the College Football Hall of Fame.

All of those happenings and more are included in this edition of SabreMail. Feel free to read it at the internet saloon, but please tie up your horses and leave your six-shooters at the door.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

George Welsh
John Phillips
With two more commitments this week, UVa is now up to seven verbal commitments for the 2005 recruiting class. Five of those commits are in-state, with the others being from Pennsylvania (The Haverford School OL Will Barker) and North Carolina (Southern Durham WR/OLB Maurice Covington).

This week the Cavaliers landed commitments from Bath County HS (VA) tight end John Phillips and North Stafford HS (VA) offensive lineman Patrick Slebonick.

Phillips, a 6-6, 240-pound prospect, chose the 'Hoos over an offer from Virginia Tech. William & Mary, which his brother Jacob will attend next year on a football scholarship, also was seriously in the running. UNC was heavily recruiting him as well.

Patrick Slebonick
Patrick Slebonick
Slebonick gave his verbal this morning to Coach Groh and company. At 6-4, 290 pounds, he is a prototypical offensive line prospect who could end up anywhere on the line. He boasted offers from Virginia Tech and N.C. State, with Maryland, Tennessee, and West Virginia among the other schools giving him serious looks.

The weekend of April 17th and 18th promises to be a big weekend for the 'Hoos. The 17th is the Spring game, followed by the Nike Camp on the 18th. Don't be surprised if UVa pulls out another commitment after that weekend.

George Welsh, Hall of Famer

George Welsh
George Welsh
Two former Virginia coaches, Earle "Greasy" Neale and Frank Murray, already are in the College Football Hall of Fame. Now the winningest coach in UVa and ACC history will join them. George Welsh, in his first year of eligibility, was named to the 2004 Hall of Fame class on Tuesday. He will be inducted on December 7, 2004 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City, then enshrined at the Hall in South Bend in August of 2005.

Welsh, who went 134-86-3 in 19 seasons at Virginia, led the Cavaliers to two ACC championships and 12 bowl games before retiring in 2000. But is he really retired? In an exclusive interview with TheSabre.com, Welsh revealed that he is interested in getting back in the business.

Asked if he missed coaching, Welsh said, "Yeah, I miss it. I got the itch last year and I tried to get back in. At this point, I wouldn't need to be the head coach at a big school or anything. I wouldn't even mind being an assistant. I talked to someone (last year) about an assistant's job, but it wasn't the right situation. ...Who knows? I might give it another shot next year."

For the complete interview with Welsh, please see the link below. You must be a Sabre Edge subscriber to view it.

Tennis team to take on Devils

The UVa men's tennis team lost a pair of matches last weekend, but the 15th-ranked Cavaliers bounced back with victories over Maryland and Old Dominion to improve their record to 18-3. Doug Stewart, ranked 21st nationally in singles, recorded a straight-set victory over No. 12 Izak van der Merwe of ODU. The Cavaliers close the regular season on Sunday with a home match against No. 5 Duke at the Snyder Tennis Center.

    Audra Smith going to UAB

A mainstay of the Virginia women's basketball program is heading south. Audra Smith, who has been a Cavalier player or coach for 15 years, was named the head coach at the University of Alabama at Birmingham on Tuesday. Smith played on three Final Four teams at UVa from 1990-92 and had been one of Debbie Ryan's assistants since 1994.

    Mixed results for lacrosse

The Virginia men's lacrosse team could not knock off No. 1 two weeks in a row. Coming off a 10-9 upset of then-No. 1 Johns Hopkins, the Cavaliers fell to the new top-ranked team, Maryland, last Saturday. The Terrapins prevailed 11-2 at Byrd Stadium, dropping UVa to 3-5 overall going into this Saturday's game at No. 5 North Carolina.

Meanwhile, the women's lax team had a little better luck. The No. 6 Cavaliers lost to No. 4 Duke 10-9 last weekend but clobbered Old Dominion 17-6 on Wednesday. Amy Appelt fired in seven goals in the two games and continues to lead the nation in scoring. Virginia (10-3) plays No. 20 George Mason at Klockner Stadium on Tuesday night.

    Baseball team on six-game streak

Brian O'Connor's first season as UVa baseball coach continues to be a success. With superb pitching and defense, the Cavaliers swept Duke in a three-game series last weekend. They gave up just seven runs and committed no errors in those games. Virginia (26-7, 8-4 ACC) then took advantage of five William & Mary errors to defeat the Tribe 11-9 on Tuesday. That means UVa will enter its big weekend series at home against Clemson (18-10, 6-0 ACC) with a six-game winning streak. Friday's and Saturday's games will start at 7 p.m., while Sunday's finale will begin at 1 p.m. at Davenport Field.
