Hello Wahoos! Well, this has certainly been an interesting week for what we would normally consider the 'off' season. Virginia decided to hold on to men's head basketball coach Pete Gillen for at least another year. UVa Lacrosse went from not likely making the NCAA Tournament to defeating Johns Hopkins and bringing a little life back into that program, as well as their hope to defend their 2003 National Championship. UVa Baseball continues to impress. UVa football started their spring training. Oh, I almost forgot. UVa Football landed two more commitments for the 2005 recruiting class. Scan down the page to pick up the details on all of these happenings as well as some new information on TheSabre.com. Take care and Go Hoos!

Recruiting News | |||||
This Week In Recruiting By Chris Horne Football recruiting... UVa picked up two commitments in the past two weeks. Kempsville (Virginia Beach, VA) defensive end/tight end Jason Fuller announced his commitment earlier this week, while The Haverford School (Haverford, PA) offensive tackle/defensive end Will Barker verballed to the 'Hoos yesterday. Fuller, who actually committed several weeks ago, earned first-team all-district honors and second-team all-region honors at defensive end as a junior last season. He totaled 66 tackles, 17 tackles-for-loss, and 10 sacks his junior season. Fuller chose UVa over offers from Syracuse and Appalachian State and interest from Maryland, among others. At 6-7, 270 pounds, Barker has the ability and athleticism to play defensive end or offensive tackle on the next level. In addition to football, he plays basketball and lacrosse. Very fast for his size, Barker has been timed at 5.0 in the 40. Fuller and Barker become the fourth and fifth commitments for the 2005 recruiting class. Basketball recruiting... 6-11, 215 pound center Tunji Soroye was co-MVP in the National Christian School tourney in Bristol TN. He led Montrose Christian with 18 points, 13 rebounds, and eight blocks in the tournament Championship game versus Our Savior of New York. Soroye has verbally committed to the 'Hoos and will sign in the April Signing Period.

News, Rumors and Fan Discussion | |||||
UVa Tennis to host big event this weekend From staff reports The Virginia men's tennis team will host a pair of matches at the Snyder Tennis Center this weekend against highly ranked foes. The Cavaliers (16-1, 5-0 ACC) moved up two spots in the week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings to No. 12, a new school record. This weekend, the team hosts fellow top-20 teams No. 18 North Carolina and No. 14 TCU. On Saturday, the No. 12 Cavaliers and No. 18 Tar Heels (18-2, 4-0 ACC) battle in a key ACC match at 1:00 p.m. The winner of the match will have an inside track toward the conference regular-season title. Last season, North Carolina topped Virginia 4-3 in Chapel Hill. On Sunday, Virginia hosts TCU (13-2) at noon. With a Cavalier victory in the match, the No. 14 ranked Horned Frogs would be the highest ranked opponent Virginia has ever beaten, breaking the record set in this year's season opener when the Cavaliers won at then-No.15 Minnesota. This is the first ever meeting between the schools. Both matches are scheduled for the Snyder Tennis Center and admission is free. In case of inclement weather, the matches could be moved indoors at Boar's Head Sports Club. For more information on UVa Tennis, please see the link below.
Two more spring football practices open to the public There are two more opportunities for fans to view Virginia Football practices this spring. Practices will be open to the public and the media on Sunday, April 4th starting at 2:15 PM and again on Friday April 9th at 4:00 PM. Visitors must report to the second floor of the McCue Center to sign in and receive a pass to enter the practice field area. Please note that there are designated areas for media and for fans. Virginia will host their annual Spring Football Festival, which includes the spring football game (or well-organized practice session, depending on how you look at it). The Festival is set for Saturday, April 17th at Scott Stadium. Further information will be provided as it develops. Virginia elects to keep Coach Gillen After a few meetings this week, Athletic Director Craig Littlepage has announced that he will retain men's basketball coach Pete Gillen. There have been several media reports on the subject over the past few days. Please see the link below for access to all of these articles.
UVa Baseball The Virginia baseball team lost two of three games against N.C. State in Raleigh last week. The Hoos won the first contest, 9-2, but could not hold off the Wolfpack in the final two games of the series, losing 12-1 and 8-7. The Cavaliers bounced back to defeat Brown in Charlottesville in a two-game series (13-2 and 11-4). This week, Virginia will take on Duke in Durham, NC for a three game series; Friday at 7:00, Saturday at noon and Sunday at 1:30 PM. Saturday's game is scheduled to be televised by FSN TV (check your local listings). Sunday's game will be broadcast by WINA. The Hoos will also travel to William & Mary for a Tuesday game at 7:00 PM. Men's Lax defeats top-ranked Johns Hopkins UVa men's lacrosse recorded their second victory in a row, this time knocking off #1 Johns Hopkins at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville, 9-8 in overtime. The Hoos won the game on a Foster Gilbert goal just 1:17 into the extended period. Virginia will have to face another #1 ranked team this weekend, conference foe Maryland. The game is set for 1:00 PM Saturday in College Park, MD and will be televised regionally by Comcast Sports Television. For more on the Hoos, see the link below.
