    This Week In Recruiting
    By Chris Horne

UVa has extended official scholarship offers to Landstown High School (Virginia Beach, VA) linebacker/defensive back Deveon Simmons and Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA) quarterback/jumbo athlete Greg Boone.

Simmons's athleticism and hard-hitting ability have earned him at least five official offers thus far (UVA, VT, UNC, Nebraska, and West Virginia). Boone has drawn seven offers to this point (UVA, VT, MD, PSU, PITT, UNC, SYR).

In basketball recruiting news, Adrian Joseph sparkled in the first half of last weekend's Commonwealth Classic, scoring 13 of his 15 total points and helping the White take close to a 30-point advantage by half time. Thought the Blue squad made a valiant attempt at a comeback, the White prevailed 155-143.

Joseph shined in the up-and-down style of play, making nice passes in transition and showing his high-rising ability. Joseph has the ability to contribute at at least three different positions on the next level - at the two, three, or four. His versatility and athleticism will be a welcome addition to UVa in 2004-2005.

       News, Rumors and Fan Discussion

    Spring football is upon us

    Marcus Hagans
Virginia Football kicked off their spring football training today. Going into the spring, the Cavaliers will be looking to fill some holes at various positions, namely at quarterback. The Hoos lost record-setting quarterback Matt Schaub to graduation, but they have four very capable athletes vying for that position. Junior Marques Hagans has a slight lead going into the spring because of his experience with that position, as well as a lot of time on the field as a wide receiver in 2003. Notre Dame sophomore transfer Chris Olsen, sophomore Anthony Martinez and redshirt freshman Kevin McCabe are also in competition for the job. All are exceptionally talented young athletes.

Other thin positions are at safety and cornerback. The Hoos only healthy safeties are sophomores Robbie Catterton and Lance Evans, with Kenneth Tynes and Marquis Weeks switching positions to shore up that area. Senior starter Jermaine Hardy is recovering from off-season knee surgery and is expected back in the fall. At cornerback, UVa has sophomores Tony Franklin and Marcus Hamilton. Both received ample playing time as red-shirt freshmen last season. Franklin started toward the end of the 2003 season after Jamaine Winborne moved from starting corner to safety in order to fill the spot left by injured Willie Davis. The future status of Davis is unknown. He's not expected to suit up and play in 2004. Superstar recruit Philip Brown will also compete for a position at corner.

The Cavaliers will also need to find a punter for 2004, with junior Tom Hagan quitting the team to focus on baseball.

John Galinsky has provided us with a spring preview focusing on the various positions of interest. This is a Sabre Edge article, so a subscription to our service is necessary.

  • Spring Football 2004 Preview: The QB Battle Begins

Several spring football practices open to the public

Virginia football fans will have several opportunities to check out spring practice as four practice sessions have been opened to the public.

Open practice for fans begins on Monday, March 29 at 4 p.m. and continues on Wednesday, March 31 at 4 p.m., on Sunday April 4 at tba, and on Friday, April 9 at 4 p.m. All practices will be held at the football practice facility next to the McCue Center and University Hall.

Virginia's annual Spring Football Festival is set for Saturday, April 17 at 11 a.m. at Scott Stadium. The team will take the field beginning at 12:30 p.m.

To gain access to the practice field, you must obtain a pass from the football office inside the McCue Center (second floor). Note: passes are sometimes handed out at the practice field gate depending on weather. Check the McCue Center first.

    Virginia basketball falls to Villanova

The men's basketball team concluded their 2003-04 season with a second round NIT loss to Villanova, 73-63. The Hoos end their season at 18-13 (6-10 in the ACC).
