   Recruiting News

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

UVa has extended scholarship offers to more in-state prospects, including Hampton wide receiver Todd Nolen and Bethel cornerback Jamar Jackson.

Nolen, a 6-4, 185 pound prospect, has received an offer from Nebraska as well. According to Hampton Head Coach Mike Smith, Nolen has "four or five schools that have said they are going to offer." Fans can expect his offer list to increase in the near future.

Jackson, a 5-9, 185 pound cornerback target, has drawn early scholarship offers from Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Maryland. UVa has been looking at him since his freshman season, and has invited him to several junior days thus far. He is being recruited by UVa Defensive Line Coach Mike London. Jackson hopes to attend the UVa and Virginia Tech spring games as well as the summer camps.

UVa is also interested in Jackson's teammate, defensive line prospect Terrence Johnson. Johnson is 6-5, 250 pounds, and has a large frame to build on. He only played the last half of his junior season due to injury, but really played well according to Bethel Head Coach Tracey Parker.

"Terrence was sort of an unknown last year because he got in a car accident early on and wasn't cleared to play until the fifth game," Parker said. "He's got the size at 6-5, 250 pounds, and he has good speed, good agility, and good hands. Terrence has those intangibles that you just can't coach - a great frame."

Virginia Tech is recruiting Terrence as well.

Virginia falls to Duke

The Cavaliers put up a good fight, but could not dispose of #1 seed Duke in the quarterfinal round of the ACC Tournament. The Hoos lost the contest 84-74, but the game was much closer than the final score revealed. Virginia played toe to toe with the Blue Devils for most of the game, and closed the gap to five with just over two minutes remaining. Excellent late game free throw shooting by Duke sealed the deal.

Virginia was led in scoring by J.R. Reynolds with 20 points and Elton Brown with 14 points. Brown also grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

Four UVa players scored in double figures, including a team-high 19 points from senior Todd Billet and 17 points from freshman J.R. Reynolds. Jason Clark and Gary Forbes provided excellent defense, swatting away three shots each. As a team, Virginia blocked an amazing 13 shots on the night, helping to hold G.W. under 35 percent shooting.

    Men's LAX loses to Princeton

The defending National Championship winning men's lacrosse team isn't playing like champions at the moment. The team lost yet another game last weekend - this one to Princeton, 8-7. The Hoos find themselves in a four-game losing slide and things don't look much better. Virginia has to face Towson in Maryland on March 21st, and then come home to face national power Johns Hopkins on the 27th. Unless Virginia sweeps the rest of their schedule, they may find themselves sitting out the NCAA Tournament this season.

Punter Tom Hagan will concentrate on baseball

According to the Roanoke Times, punter Tom Hagan has indicated to Head Football Coach Al Groh that he will not return to football for the 2004 season. UVa Baseball is currently ranked 19th nationally and it appears that Hagan's best interests are to concentrate primarily on that sport. Hagan struggled for most of last season while playing football, but seemed to come around a bit toward the end.
