Wahoowa!

How 'bout the men's hoops team? After losing five straight in the conference back in late January and early February, they've bounced back to win five of the last seven games, including three wins over teams ranked 15th or higher. Last night, the Hoos defeated Clemson 83-79 in overtime to win their first ACC Tournament game under Coach Pete Gillen. While it was only the play-in game, it's still a post season win for the Cavaliers and something to build on. The Hoos will face Duke today at noon. Read the rest of SabreMail for other information regarding the contest.

Take care and Go Hoos!

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Joseph's Season Comes to an End

Brewster Academy saw their season come to an end, falling in the NEPSAC Finals 101-86 despite a valiant second-half comeback.

"We were down by 20 midway through the first half," Brewster Academy Head Coach Jason Smith said. "We cut the lead to one in the second half and had the ball, but our point guard was called for a charge and that was his fifth foul. They made their free throws at the end and won the game."

University of Virginia signee Adrian Joseph enjoyed an outstanding season for Brewster, averaging 17 points and 10 rebounds per contest. According to Coach Smith, Joseph impressed not only with his game, but with his character.

"We had great chemistry since the beginning of the year," Smith said. "It was because of kids like Adrian, whose character is through the roof. I really can't say enough good things about the type of person he is. He's a great basketball player, but he's a much better person.

"At our school, we have an honor system. Adrian has achieved the John Brewster scholar status each time, which symbolizes integrity and honesty. He's doing exceptionally well in his classes. All of his teachers speak highly of him and his motivation in the classroom."

At 6-7, 200 pounds, Joseph projects as a wing forward on the next level but has the versatility to play a number of different spots.

"I've seen various recruiting sites list him as a power forward, but there were so many games when he hit threes and played the wing for us," Smith said. "He has the potential to play two or three different positions on the next level. I think he's going to thrive in the up-tempo system. He plays the front man in the full court press because of his long arms and athleticism.

"I think he'll contribute the most at the three. Down the line, he could conceivably become a two, but one thing he needs to work at is his ballhandling. Sometimes he tends to over-dribble."

UVa falls to Maryland to close out regular season

The men's basketball team fell to Maryland Sunday, 70-61, closing out their regular season at 16-11 overall and 6-10 in the ACC. The Hoos were led by juniors Elton Brown (16 points) and Devin Smith (15 points), as well as J.R. Reynolds (14 points). Virginia struggled mightily from the perimeter, hitting just 3 of their 21 shots from behind the arc. Senior Todd Billet, the hero in many of the recent games, could not find the mark. He was 1 for 14 shooting on the night.

UVa wins first ACC post season game under Gillen

The Cavaliers bounced back Thursday night, defeating Clemson in the ACC Tournament play-in game, 83-79 in overtime. It was yet another dramatic win for the Hoos, making it the fifth game in the last seven that the Hoos have won or extended the game with a late 3-point play. This time around, it was freshman J.R. Reynolds with the miracle shot. Reynolds grabbed an errant Clemson pass, and connected on a layup while getting fouled. Reynolds completed the traditional three-point play to tie the game at 68.

UVa played excellent defense and got possession of the ball with the shot clock turned off, but were unable to get an open shot to win the game. Reynolds and Devin Smith led the charge in the extended period, hitting a pair of three pointers that put Virginia up for good. Four Wahoos scored in double figures; Todd Billet (20), Elton Brown (19), J.R. Reynolds (18) and Devin Smith (14). Billet also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Up next for the Hoos - Duke!
