Wahoos,

In January and most of February, it was tough to be a Cavalier fan. The men's and women's hoops teams weren't exactly setting the world on fire. Fans could only wish for spring football to get here sooner.

Never fear, Wahoos. Your wait for spring football won't be as unpleasant as you thought. It looks like the Virginia men's basketball team has turned the corner, winning four of their last five ACC contests with a shot at actually making the NCAA Tournament.

And if the recent success of the basketball team hasn't lifted your spirits, take note of some other success stories in recent weeks. The men's and women's swimming and diving teams both won their ACC Championship meets. This was the sixth straight ACC Championship for the men's team, and the second straight for the women's team. And how about the baseball team? New head coach Brian O'Connor has his team at 10-1 going into this weekend's three-game series with Central Connecticut State.

And for those who simply cannot wait for spring football, here are the dates. Spring practice is scheduled to begin March 28th, with the spring football game (festival) on April 17th. Expect Coach Al Groh to open up some practices to the public and media for the first week. Dates and times will be provided when they are released by UVa Media Relations.

Take care and Go Hoos!

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

UVa basketball signee Adrian Joseph poured in 22 points in Brewster Academy's regular season finale against Northfield Mount Hermon School. Brewster won 98-90, finishing off the regular season with a five-game winning streak.

In the first round of the NEPSAC Class A playoffs, Brewster defeated South Kent 91-80. They will play the semifinal game on Friday, March 5th.

Featured this week in 2005 updates for football recruiting are Southern Durham (NC), DeMatha Catholic (MD), Salem (VA), and Ragsdale (NC). Prospects with offers from these schools include Southern WR/OLB and UVa commit Maurice Covington, LB Charles Gamble, and WR/DB Brandon Woods; DeMatha RB/CB Anthony Wiseman, and Ragsdale's blue-chip tailback Toney Baker.

Baker, who will be one of the top tailbacks in the country for the 2005 class, lists UVa along with VT, UNC, NC State, and Tennessee as his top five. UVA is listed on the lists of the other offered prospects as well.

   News, Rumors and Fan Discussion

UVa men's hoops finding a way to win

Who would have thunk it? Just a few weeks ago, not many except for perhaps Elton Brown were predicting the Wahoos to have a legitimate shot at making the Big Dance. Since T.J. Bannister has moved into the starting role at point guard, the Hoos have been playing good basketball and upsetting several Top 15 opponents in the process.

The Hoos have won four of their last five games, all against conference opponents. The home contest against #14 Georgia Tech on February 14th started the landslide of victories, with senior guard Todd Billet ending the game in dramatic style with a late three-pointer. Billet added late game heroics in two of the next three games; a late three against Clemson to pull off a 58-55 win on the road, and then another late three against #12 North Carolina at home to pull off the upset, 74-72.

Against #11 Wake Forest Tuesday night, Billet was the decoy while Devin Smith cashed in on a traditional three-point play. With less than ten seconds remaining, Smith drove the baseline, made a tough layup and was fouled. Smith hit the free throw which put the Hoos up by three. Smith's play was the deciding factor in the win, marking the fourth time in five games the Cavaliers have won a game with a shot in the final seconds.

Men's Lax has disappointing road trip

Before last weekend, UVa Lacrosse was the #1 team in the country. This week, they've fallen into a tie for 15th after their unfortunate road trip to Colorado. In back-to-back days this past weekend, the Cavaliers lost to Air Force (7-6) and Denver (9-7). The defending National Champs now stand at 1-2 on the season and will host national power Syracuse at Klockner Stadium on Saturday, March 6th at 1:00 PM EST. See link below for details.

Note: The men's lacrosse game versus Syracuse will not be live on WINA due to the women's ACC basketball contest. The game will be streamed live over the Internet at www.virginiasports.com. Broadcast coverage begins Saturday at 12:45 p.m. with pregame festivities. Mac McDonald and Doug Tarring call all the exciting action as the Cavaliers and Orangemen renew arguably the game's hottest rivalry. The contest will be tape delayed on AM 1070 WINA and will air immediately following the conclusion of the ACC Women's Basketball Tournament Quarterfinal between UVA and North Carolina. The tape delay broadcast is expected to begin at approximately 5:00 p.m.

Blue led Virginia in assists and steals this season and was second on the team in scoring. Teamer was named as an Honorable Mention selection. She was the team leader in scoring and rebounding.

Jeff White from the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported this morning that Coach Al Groh has added two graduate assistant coaches to the program. Poindexter has been promoted to full time status as the new running backs coach. Former William & Mary assistant Chad Wilt will help out on the defensive side of the ball. Wilt played for Indiana University and recently coached special teams and the defensive line at Central Connecticut State.
