    This Week In Recruiting
    By Chris Horne

In basketball recruiting news, the terrific high school career of Penn Charter (Philadelphia, PA) point guard Sean Singletary ended on a great note last Sunday. Singletary, who has signed with UVa, led his team to an 86-75 victory over Germantown Academy in the Inter-Academic League championship game.

"It feels great, but it's sad at the same time," Singletary told the Philadelphia Inquirer following the win. "I hate to say goodbye to my teammates. It was a selfless group."

In the contest, Singletary had 26 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. He was named Inter-Academy MVP. On the season, he averaged 22.9 points per contest.

Singletary is rated as one of the top point guards in the 2003-2004 recruiting class. He is rated a four-star prospect by Insiders.com as well as Rivals.com.

Earlier this week, Brewster Academy defeated Bridgton Academy 82-74. 6-7, 200 pound small forward Adrian Joseph, who has also signed with UVa, finished with 18 points in the winning effort.

One final regular season game remains for Brewster (19-5) when they Northfield Mount Hermon School on February 28th. They then head to the NEPSAC Class A playoffs.

Expect an update on Tunji Soroye very soon as well. The 6-11, 210 pound Montrose Christian Academy (MD) center has turned in a solid season for Coach Stu Vetter. He has verbally committed to UVa.

In football recruiting news, UVa received their third verbal commitment for the 2005 recruiting class this week, when Broad Run (Ashburn, VA) tight end/defensive end Alex Field committed to the 'Hoos. Field, a 6-6, 248 pound prospect, earned Dulles district Player of the Year honors last year as well as first-team all-district tight end.

Though he plays tight end and defensive end in high school, he has the potential to grow into an offensive tackle. Field chose UVa over interest from Maryland and Marshall, among others.

Two more wins for men's hoops, courtesy of Todd Billet

The Virginia men's basketball team won two more games at the buzzer this week. In both contests, the late-game hero was again senior guard Todd Billet. In UVa's 58-55 win over Clemson on the road last weekend, Billet drained a three-pointer with 16 seconds remaining to clinch UVa's first ACC road win of the year. The last second three-pointer was Billet's second game-winning shot in three games. He helped the Hoos knock off 15th-ranked Georgia Tech just a week prior with a similar shot.

Billet worked another miracle last Tuesday when he drained a three pointer with just over 10 seconds remaining against North Carolina. Billet's three gave the Hoos a 74-72 advantage. Tough defense on Carolina's last possession caused an errant final shot that fell way short of the mark, giving the Hoos their third late-game victory in the last four contests.

Virginia now stands at 15-10 overall and 5-9 in the ACC with just two regular season games remaining. The Hoos have all but secured a place in this year's NIT. If they can continue their winning ways over the next few games, an NCAA berth may become a reality. Just a couple of weeks ago, it was unthinkable that the Cavaliers would have any shot at making the Big Dance. With wins over #15 Georgia Tech and #12 North Carolina, a win over #11 Wake Forest at home next Tuesday would make the selection committee take notice. Still, the Hoos may have to win at least one more game to get in - either the game against Maryland in College Park or a first round ACC Tournament game. Coach Gillen's Cavaliers have yet to win an ACC Tournament game, so a win there would show improvement in the eyes of the selection committee and quite possibly save the coach's job for another season.

    Up next?

Men's hoops will play only one game this week, taking on Wake Forest at home Tuesday, March 2nd at 7:00 PM EST. The game will be televised by ESPN2.

    UVa Baseball continues to win

The UVa baseball team won again this week, knocking off James Madison 10-1. The team split last week's games with Penn State, winning the first 7-1, but losing the second 8-3. Overall, the Hoos stand at 6-1 overall and will host Seton Hall for a three-game series this weekend (Fri at 3pm, Sat at 1PM and Sun at 1PM). The Cavaliers will also travel to Richmond on March 3 for a 2:30 PM match-up against the Spiders, then return home for a three-game series against Central Connecticut State starting Friday, March 5.
