This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

The class of 2005 promises to be a very talented one, as evidenced by the amount of early offers being made by top Division I-A programs. Currently, UVa has officially offered the following in-state prospects.

QB/Ath Cody Broadus (per Rivals) - Warwick High School
DE Jeffrey Fitzgerald - Hermitage High School
LB Darryl Gresham (per Roanoke Times) - William Fleming High School
QB Vic Hall - Gretna High School (UVA Commit)
RB/CB Victor Harris - Highland Springs High School
RB Elan Lewis - Phoebus High School
NT Joseph Johnson - Varina High School
TE John Phillips - Bath County High School
OT Pat Sheil - Centreville High School

The Cavaliers have verbally offered LB/DB Deveon Simmons of Landstown High School as well. Next year looks to be strong in the Virginia Beach and Hampton areas, with central Virginia offering some solid talent as well. Look for info on these and more in-state targets in the next few months, as the 2005 class starts to take shape.

Virginia Hoops breaks losing streak, temporarily

UVa broke their five-game losing streak last Saturday when senior guard Todd Billet drained a 3-point shot at the buzzer as the Hoos upset 15th-ranked Georgia Tech, 82-80. While Billet was the late-game hero, the Cavaliers' had several other players step up to have strong performances and influence the positive outcome of the contest.

Freshman point guard T.J. Bannister had perhaps his greatest game as a Cavalier thus far, playing 31 minutes, contributing 15 points, grabbing four rebounds and dishing out a team-high seven assists. Bannister hit on five of six from the field, while knocking down all four of his free throws. His performance was mirrored by that of junior center Elton Brown. Brown played hungry for most of his 33 minutes, contributing 21 points and snagging seven rebounds (three on the offensive end). Brown's presence was felt inside where he frustrated the Yellow Jackets for most of the night. When Elton wasn't scoring inside, he was being placed on the free throw line, where he hit 9 of 14 shots.

Unfortunately for the Hoos, their game wasn't as good a few days later, losing a road game to Florida State, 76-57. Virginia shot a miserable 36 percent from the field and turned the ball over 14 times. Only one Cavalier, Elton Brown, scored in double figures for the game. Virginia defense allowed the Seminoles to hit on 49 percent from the field while dishing out 19 assists (compared with UVa's nine assists).

Virginia's record now stands at 13-10 overall and just 3-9 in conference play. The Hoos will have to play a road contest against Clemson Saturday, February 21st before coming home and playing North Carolina next Tuesday, February 24th. Saturday's game against the Tigers is scheduled for 4:00 PM EST, while the Tuesday night contest against the Tar Heels is set for 8:00 PM EST. Both games will be televised by the ACC Sports Network (Raycom-Jefferson Productions). Check your local listings for appropriate channels in your area.
