This Week In Recruiting By Michael Ingalls
Virginia also shored up its defensive line, grabbing two of the top defensive players in the state of Virginia in Olu Hall (Fairfax) and Chris Long (Charlottesville). Hall played defensive end in high school, but will likely move to outside linebacker at UVa. He was considered by many to be the number one prospect in the state of Virginia. Long, son of NFL Hall of Famer Howie Long, is a man among boys on the field. Not long ago, Long was considering playing offensive line at UVa, but he turned in an outstanding year playing defensive end at St. Anne's Belfield and is now likely to play on the defensive side of the ball as a Cavalier. Long will have to adjust some to the 3-4 defensive alignment, but it shouldn't take long for him to settle in and become a major player for the Hoos over the next couple of years. The Hoos also nabbed two more excellent defensive line prospects in Jon Kirchner (Lexington) and Clint Sintim (Woodbridge). On the offensive side of the ball, the only disappointment was not landing a star wide receiver. Virginia had hopes of landing a speed receiver that could stretch the field vertically and give the Hoos some more options. But efforts to land one of the nation's big time receivers fell short. The Hoos had their eyes on Doug Dutch (committed to Michigan), Dwayne Jarrett (committed to Southern Cal), Bryant Creamer (committed to Illinois) and Eddie Royal (committed to VT). Still, the Hoos did well on the offensive side of the ball with recruiting this year, landing some excellent prospects in offensive lineman Zak Stair (Manassass, VA), tight end Tom Santi (Nashville, TN), fullback James Terry (Lake Ridge, VA) and running back Cedric Peerman (Naruna, VA). The Hoos also landed some recruits that were just under the radar screen for many recruiting services, namely quarterback Scott Deke (Los Angeles, CA). UVa had both Deke and top in-state QB Sean Glennon in camp this year. But the Cavalier coaches were very impressed with Deke, offering him a scholarship instead of Glennon, even though Glennon was considered at the time to be the top prospect in the state of Virginia. Deke didn't disappoint on the field this past season, racking up 2,150 yards and 22 touchdowns on 144 of his 257 passes. The other signees include athlete Ahmad Bradshaw (Bluefield, VA), placekicker Chris Gould (Lock Haven, PA), athlete Jamaal Jackson (Chesapeake, VA), linebacker Devonta Brown (Charlottesville, VA), fullback Kevin Bradley (Fayetteville, NC) and offensive lineman Brandon Albert (Glen Burnie, MD). Albert was the biggest surprise, not committing to the Hoos until signing day. Albert, a 6-7, 310-pounder is an exceptional athlete for his size. He's a two-sport athlete who played both football and basketball in high school. Overall, UVa landed an excellent class that will fill some important needs in the coming years. CNNSi is reporting this class as the 25th best in the nation, making it the third straight Top 25 class for Coach Al Groh and his staff. Six Cavaliers named to Academic All-ACC Team Official UVa Release GREENSBORO, N.C. - Six University of Virginia football players earned Academic All-Atlantic Coast Conference Team honors, Commissioner John Swofford announced on Tuesday. To be eligible, a player must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the fall semester or have maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career. Named to the 47-member team were Cavalier seniors Ryan Childress, Ryan Sawyer, and Matt Schaub, junior Charis Canty, sophomore Connor Hughes, and freshman Marcus Hamilton.
Virginia hoops drops two more conference games The men's hoops team dropped two more conference games this past week. The Cavaliers lost a road game to Wake Forest on Saturday (91-78). The Demon Deacs manhandled the Hoos for the entire game, eventually pushing their lead to 28 before substituting near the end of the contest. Three UVa players scored in double figures, including 24 from Elton Brown and 18 from Derrick Byars. The Hoos fell just short in a hard-fought home game against Maryland Wednesday night (71-67). Virginia had a chance to tie late in the game, trailing 69-67, but the Terps' John Gilchrist stole the ball from senior guard Todd Billet before UVa was able to get a shot off. The Terps scored a layup off the steal to put away the Hoos. Elton Brown again led the Hoos with 24 points, followed by 15 from freshman guard J.R. Reynolds. The two losses bring the Hoos to 12-7 overall and 2-6 in the conference. For articles, statistics and notes on all UVa's games, please see the link below.
Next up for Virginia hoops? Virginia will try to improve their conference record this week when they take on N.C. State and Duke. The Hoos play N.C. State at home tomorrow, February 7th at 3:00 EST. The game will be televised by the ACC Sports Network (Raycom-Jefferson Productions). Check your local listings for the correct channel. The Hoos lost to the Pack earlier this season in Raleigh, 86-69.
Virginia will travel to Durham, North Carolina to face the #1 Duke Blue Devils Wednesday night at 7:00 EST. The game will be nationally televised by ESPN. The Cavaliers lost their first meeting with Duke at home this season, 93-71.
