This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

UVA had a successful recruiting weekend last week, gaining commitments last weekend from Eleanor Roosevelt High School (MD) safety Theirrien "Bud" Davis and Seventy-First High School (Fayetteville, NC) fullback/inside linebacker Kevin Bradley. The 'Hoos now have 15 verbal commitments, and are hoping to add to that number in the next week and a half before the February 4th Signing Day.

Davis, a 6-1, 190 pound super-sleeper prospect, has been timed at 4.33 in the 40 yard dash. He is a track star who ran a 10.65 in the 100 meters in last year's Morgan Invitational. His speed will be an asset to a Cavaliers secondary that needs more of it. Bradley is a 6-2, 230 pound prospect who has been timed at 4.57 in the 40 yard dash. He could be a bruising fullback with good speed or an inside linebacker prospect. In high school, he played defensive end, which is a big reason he was not on a lot of team's lists.

Westfield (VA) wide receiver Eddie Royal had a great visit to Charlottesville last weekend. He didn't commit, but the Cavaliers are right there at the top with Virginia Tech and Marshall. Royal visits Tech this weekend and the Thundering Herd next weekend.

Official visitors expected on campus, at least to my knowledge, this weekend include Simeon (Chicago, IL) wide receiver Bryant Creamer. Creamer is a 6-3, 200 pound prospect with good speed. He will choose among Virginia, Illinois, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, and Boston College. My guess is that he stays close to home, however he really likes Corwin Brown (main recruiter) and is giving UVA a chance. He would be an excellent get for Coach Groh in company in light of Doug Dutch choosing Michigan. Running back Andrew Pearman (Charlotte, NC) will also be taking his official visit to Virginia this weekend. Pearman was one of Virginia's earliest commitments for this class, but Pearman withdrew his commitment when running back's coach Kevin Ross was named to Army's new staff.

Notable prospects that have chosen to go elsewhere include Dutch (Michigan), RB Andre Brown (NC State), and OT Phil Trautwein (Florida). Expect many more decisions next week from many key UVA targets, possibly including WR Dwayne Jarrett, DL Dwayne Hendricks, and S Nate Lyles.

The U.Va. Alumni Club of Charlottesville Hosts Fifth Annual Dinner & Auction

On Saturday, February 7, 2004, the University of Virginia Alumni Club of Charlottesville will hold its fifth annual Grand Gala Dinner & Auction at Alumni Hall. The fundraiser supports the club's Jefferson Scholarship effort to endow a full-tuition scholarship to a Charlottesville-area student on an annual basis.

The hugely popular event has raised more than $50,000 in prior years, and the alumni club seeks your support to replicate that success this year. The evening will begin with cocktails and a silent auction, followed by an elegant dinner and spirited live auction. This year's celebrity auctioneers are Al Groh (COMM 66), UVA's head football coach; Rita Mae Brown, renowned local novelist, poet and playwright; and General John Jumper, US Air Force Chief of Staff.

Notable items for this year's auction include: tennis balls and pictures autographed by professional tennis players Brian Vahaly (COMM 01) and Andy Roddick; generous golf, spa and hotel packages at various regional resorts; fine jewelry items; Waterford Crystal; rare Persian rugs; autographed books; gift certificates to area restaurants; and tickets to otherwise sold-out UVA sporting events.

Tickets to the Gala are $60 each and RSVPs will be accepted until February 3rd. The event begins at 6 p.m. at Alumni Hall in Charlottesville. If you are interested in attending, contact Cathy Schafer at [email protected] or 434.924.6834 or mail the RSVP card to Grand Gala & Dinner Auction Committee, c/o U.Va. Club of Charlottesville, PO Box 5581, Charlottesville, VA 22905.

The merit-based Jefferson Scholarship is awarded to select high school seniors who possess outstanding leadership, scholarship and citizenship. The four-year scholarship to the University is given through the Alumni Association's Jefferson Scholars Foundation.

Virginia hoops wins back to back ACC contests

The Virginia men's basketball team won home contests against Florida State and Clemson this week. Coach Pete Gillen went with a new starting lineup that included both Jason Clark and Donte Minter. The result provided several blocked shots and the best defense the Hoos have played all season. The Hoos needed overtime to dispatch the Seminoles, 76-67 last Sunday. They were led offensively by Todd Billet (26 points) and Devin Smith (21 points). Defensively, Minter blocked four shots and Clark was credited with two.

The Hoos defeated the Tigers, 61-50 on Tuesday evening. In perhaps one of the ugliest basketball games you will ever see, the Cavaliers survived on the efforts of J.R. Reynolds (career high 11 points with three assists and three steals), Devin Smith (10 points with seven rebounds) and Donte Minter (10 points, one assist and one blocked shot).

The Hoos have improved their conference record to 2-3 with an overall record of 12-4. Next up, a road game with North Carolina on Saturday.
