Fellow Wahoos, Now that football season is over, and the basketball team isn't exactly lighting it up, Virginia fans are starting to focus on the heart of the football recruiting season. I'd like to take this opportunity to make a few suggestions with regard to this. Following football recruiting can be painful, frustrating and exhausting all at once. The success of the program, along with the emotions of the fans, are riding on the decisions of 17 and 18-year-old athletes. Sometimes things do not always go the way we'd like them to, but that's no reason to loose your cool. Please be careful with your posting behavior on TheSabre.com's message boards. Fans aren't the only ones reading the boards. Our message boards are read by administrators, college coaches, college players, high school coaches, high school players and relatives/friends of all of the above. Please conduct yourself in a responsible manner and be respectful of other posters. And by all means, please do not make personal remarks or degrading comments about recruits (or anyone for that matter). When a recruit chooses a University, he's making perhaps the biggest decision of his life. Please respect that. If a recruit chooses another school, please wish them well or say nothing at all. As always, thanks for making TheSabre.com a great place for fans to interact. We appreciate your support.

Recruiting News | |||||
This Week In Recruiting By Chris Horne Virginia did not receive good news this week, losing targets Andrew Bowman and Trimaine Goddard to Virginia Tech and UNC respectively. In addition, the news broke that previous commitment Andrew Pearman is going to make official visits to Army, South Carolina, and Hawaii in addition to Virginia. He will more than likely end up at Virginia, however it is clear that his recruitment is open right now and anything can happen. This weekend, UVA is expected to host Westfield (Chantilly, VA) wide receiver Eddie Royal, Eleanor Roosevelt (Greenbelt, MD) safety Thierrien "Bud" Davis, and Seventy-First (Fayetteville, NC) linebacker/fullback Kevin Bradley. Only Bradley does not have an offer from the Cavaliers. Royal, who the Virginia coaches would like to play the position Marques Hagans played this year, is one of the top wide receiver targets. At 5-10, 170 pounds, he possesses the speed and elusiveness to break big plays at any point in the game, on both offense and special teams. The Cavaliers will have to beat out Virginia Tech, Marshall, and Tennessee for his signature. Davis, who received an offer from the Cavs in December, has drawn offers from Penn State (per Insiders), Marshall, and Duke. He is a 6-1, 190 pound safety prospect who runs a 4.33 in the 40. Bradley is a 6-2, 230 pound prospect who has been timed at 4.57 in the 40. He currently has only one offer, which is from Central Michigan. Following this weekend, top prospect Andre Brown is expected to announce his decision between UVA, NC State, and UNC on January 21st. Other prospects that may announce soon include Gonzaga wide receiver Doug Dutch, who may have a decision by the end of next week. UVA is probably in better shape at this point for Brown, who is one of the top running backs in the country. The stretch run is upon us in recruiting now, and decisions can come at any time. Though they received bad news this week, UVA remains involved with a lot of top targets, and I would expect them to land at least a few of these players. The Cavaliers just need to start getting some momentum at this point, and hope to finish the 2004 class out on a strong note.

Virginia basketball drops to 0-3 in ACC The UVa men's basketball team resumed ACC play this past week, but their first two opponents weren't exactly teams you'd like to see this early in conference play. Virginia hosted Duke last Sunday in front of the largest crowd this season at University Hall. The Hoos held on for a while, but then fell hard in the end, losing by 22 (93-71). Virginia traveled to Atlanta to face Georgia Tech Thursday night, but the result was much the same. Virginia lost the contest 75-57 in one of their poorest showings this season. The Hoos played well at the beginning of the game, nailing 7 of 8 three-point baskets, but they could not contain the Yellow Jackets on defense. Turnovers were another big killer for the Cavaliers. The Cavaliers will have a shot at getting a couple of wins at home this week. Virginia resumes play this Sunday, January 18th against Florida State at 1:00 PM (Televised by Raycome-Jefferson Pilot Sports. They will suit up again on Tuesday, January 20th against Clemson at 7:00 PM (Check your listings for TV - should be Comcast or Fox Sports Net). $50,000 from Continental Tire Bowl to fund music festival At the recent men's basketball game between Duke and Virginia at University Hall (Jan. 11), UVa Athletics Director Craig Littlepage presented a check for $50,000 to Elizabeth Hudson, chairwoman of the University's McIntire Department of Music. The money is from Virginia's share of football bowl proceeds and will be used to finance an upcoming University music festival.
Matt Schaub to play in Senior Bowl UVa quarterback Matt Schaub has been chosen to play in the 2004 Senior Bowl in Mobile Alabama on January 24th. Sources indicate that Schaub will start for the South team, which also features quarterbacks Philip Rivers (N.C. State) and J.P. Losman (Tulane). The North team features three of the nation's top quarterbacks in Jon Navarre (Michigan), Cody Pickett (Washington) and Josh Harris (Bowling Green). Full rosters should be released on or just prior to January 18th. Schaub broke just about every quarterback record at UVa, including touchdown passes for a career. His touchdown strike to sophomore tight end Heath Miller in the 2003 Continental Tire Bowl broke Shawn Moore's record of 55. Schaub also holds records for passing yardage in a career, pass completions in a career, pass attempts in a career, as well as 300 and 200-yard passing games in a career. Please see the link to the full report for more info on ticket prices and ordering information.
