Welsh To Be Inducted in College Football Hall of Fame
It has a nice ring to it, and it will become reality later this year. TheSabre.com has learned that Welsh will be named today as a member of the 2004 class of the College Football Hall of Fame and will be inducted in December. The National Football Foundation will announce the entire Division I-A class at 5 p.m. today. Welsh is flying to South Bend, Ind., the site of the College Football Hall of Fame, to be on hand for the announcement. Coaches are eligible for the Hall three years after their retirement. Welsh retired in 2000 as the winningest coach in Virginia and ACC history. In 19 years at UVa, he went 134-86-3, including 80 conference wins, and guided the Cavaliers to two ACC championships and 12 bowl games. He was named ACC coach of the year five times. Welsh also was the winningest coach in Navy history, compiling a 55-46-1 record from 1973-81. Overall, his 189 victories rank 24th among NCAA Division I-A coaches. The 2004 College Football Hall of Fame class will be officially inducted on December 7, 2004 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. They will be enshrined at the Hall in South Bend in August of 2005.
